I heard the news that His Majesty was heading north the day before I had to leave the Imperial Palace to enroll in the academy.

Since the weekly tea time had continued to prevent rumors of discord from spreading too widely, there had been countless opportunities—like stars in the sky—for him to inform me beforehand.

In fact, when I had previously asked whether I should prepare an excuse, he had shaken his head and said no.

But it wasn’t my place to feel resentful over such a thing, so I simply decided to let it go. Still, there was one thing I was curious about.

“North?”

“Yes. Didn’t I tell you before that I have my own territory up north? I’ll just go there and pretend to be a lord for a while.”

I remembered that. So my curiosity wasn’t about that.

“But you never particularly liked the cold, did you?”

As far as I knew, the Empire’s northern region was bordered by rugged mountain ranges, and because the sea winds had to circle around those peaks before entering, the temperature there was reportedly even lower than the area north of the mountains.

I remembered clearly how Paniya had thrown a fit when His Majesty once mentioned going north.

She’d protested, “How can you take someone from the south to a place buried under snow half the year?”

Though the climate of the Ramore Kingdom was indeed mild, I hadn’t even lived there long enough to acclimate to its temperatures.

“It’s not that I dislike it particularly.”

“But you get new furs every year—”
