Long Live the Emperor, Minus Me (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 23
“Give me that horse. I’ll buy it for a hundred gold coins. Sir Pluke, your checkbook.”
“Wait, hold on a moment!”
The owner’s face turned pale as he waved his hands frantically. Normally, he might have tried to haggle for ten coins or so, but being asked for twenty times the expected price left him too stunned to even think of such tactics.
“I—I simply can’t sell it for that amount! Five gold coins… no, ten. Yes, I’ll accept up to ten. That’s already more than a decent steed would cost. At that price, I’d consider myself well-compensated, and your esteemed self wouldn’t have to spend excessively—wouldn’t that be ideal? So—”
“Listen.”
The Grand Duke spoke in a flat, even tone.
“Y-yes, yes.”
“If you don’t need the money, just cash the check and throw away ninety coins on the street. Or go over there and sell my check to some laborer for ten coins. If you dislike the hundred-coin offer, then handle it yourself—royalty doesn’t haggle over prices in an undignified manner. Now then, Sir Pluke.”
The knight, seemingly sympathetic to the merchant, trembled as he handed over his checkbook. The Grand Duke calmly scribbled the amount onto it.
“I didn’t bring enough cash, so I’ll pay by check. Since it’d be inconvenient for you to close your shop and come collect it, I’ll send someone today to retrieve the check. I’ll take the horse then, so just keep it safely aside for now.”
The Grand Duke’s small hand extended a check for an absurd sum. The merchant reached out with hands shaking so violently he seemed ready to collapse, and accepted it.
“Our shopping ended much earlier than expected. Shall we go to a café or something?”
Though I’d been the one to suggest it, the Grand Duke asked me in a calm voice, as if he hadn’t just spent a hundred gold coins.
I replied evenly.
“If Your Grace wishes.”

He looked up at her, his eyebrows drooping: “My hand… has no strength.”
“Shall I… feed you?” she asked tentatively.
He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
Thinking she was drowning, he jumped in without hesitation to save her, but nearly drowned himself. In the end, it was she who swam over to rescue him, giving him air underwater.
After emerging from the water, his ear tips turned red. He lightly brushed his cheek, tucking his sideburns behind his ear, revealing delicate, pink-tinged ear tips. He lowered his gaze, too embarrassed to look at her.
