“You intend to speak directly to the Empire yourself?”

Normally, he would have gone on at length about what I’d done wrong and how I should have reacted, but perhaps the Count had already decided he’d never see me again, so his words didn’t drag on any further.

Maybe that was a small mercy.

I kept my voice stiff as I replied.

“As I’ve said, Her Majesty the Empress still favors me, so there’s at least some chance she’ll accept what I tell her directly.”

Though it was enough to merely deceive the Kingdom until my return, I needed a proper alibi with the Empire.

Thus, I declared that I would personally handle the formalities regarding the replacement of the peace envoy.

Of course, I said as much but never actually informed the Empire.

By rights, this was a flimsy scheme—one that wouldn’t even guarantee a solid alibi later, and might well be exposed before I even returned home.

In any proper nation, diplomatic procedures wouldn’t be entrusted to an inexperienced novice who wasn’t even an official diplomat; and if they were, double-checking would be standard practice.

But the Ramore Kingdom didn’t disappoint my expectations.

When I said I’d handle it myself, they truly left it entirely to me.

Things had gone so smoothly that even now, right before my departure, the Kingdom hadn’t sent any notice to the Imperial Palace.

Indeed, it seemed this hopeless country had survived this long only thanks to the barbarians.

At this point, shouldn’t they be handing out certificates of appreciation?
