He was so high up the chain that it was easier to convince him alone than deal with a horde of underlings.

With his rigid demeanor, monotonous tone, and blunt, unfiltered facts devoid of tact or consideration, he frequently left Father in an awkward spot.

Even that damn Devon often returned from the estate, grumbling about having been humiliated by this man—though to my ears, everything he said had been perfectly reasonable.

I smiled confidently and gave a gentle grin.

“Viscount Totea, thank you for clarifying the situation.”

Viscount Totea blinked his cloudy eyes, shadowed by deep-set brows.

“I didn’t do it to hear your thanks, my lord. Do you truly grasp the responsibility that comes with being the head of this house?”

“Of course. Every decision I make is solely for the prosperity of our territory and the well-being of its people.”

“That proposal isn’t entirely unreasonable—but you bypassed proper procedure entirely and never even sought the consent of the party involved.”

Viscount Totea grumbled in his weighty voice and gave Uncle a meaningful glance. My still-stunned uncle cleared his throat and nodded, casting me a subtle sidelong look.

“I’m sorry to Uncle. I must’ve startled you.”

“Do you think I’d jump up just because a bug crawled underfoot?”
