A flicker of doubt passed through Lirien’s eyes.

And for good reason—who would believe someone who suddenly appeared and claimed their lover was a married man?

“Well, you see…”

She hesitated briefly. Revealing her true identity would surely fluster the other person.

They might even assume she’d come to yank them by the hair and be terrified on the spot.

But at this point, there was no reason left to hide it.

‘If we meet at some social event anyway, they’ll find out eventually. What does it matter?’

I took a measured pause to soften the blow before speaking.

“Your lover is Count Devon Bueil, and I am his wife.”

“…A count? But he told me he was a commoner!”

“He lied to you.”

Lirien’s dark brown eyes trembled faintly with confusion.

“W-wait—forgive me, I don’t quite understand… Are you saying that… you, standing before me right now, are Countess Bueil…?”

Bingo. I gave her a gentle smile.

“Eep!” Lirien gasped in shock, flustered and fumbling. Finally, she instinctively covered her head with both hands.

Her eyes held a perfectly reasonable suspicion: that I might have come to pull her by the hair myself.

Seeing Lirien trembling like a leaf, I chuckled warmly.

“Don’t worry. I’m not here to harm you.”

(Though if I tried yanking your hair, your fiercely protective younger brother might rip mine right off my head!) I thought to myself, stepping closer and gently taking her hands in mine.

“Lady Lirien, I came because I was worried about you.”

“W-worried… about me?”

Lirien looked up at me warily, her eyelids fluttering. Her innocent, kind face made me firm my own expression as I spoke earnestly.

“Don’t see that man anymore. You’re too precious for that.”

Lirien’s eyes, fixed on mine, slowly widened—as if she’d never heard such words before in her life.

“Y-you think… I’m precious?”

“Of course.”

As if that were even up for debate.

I grinned lightly and patted the back of her hand to reassure her, infusing the gesture with a trace of guilt and pity for nearly having killed her once.

“So, promise me you won’t see him again?”

Lirien nodded dazedly, as though entranced by a new religious revelation.

‘Good. She’s such a gentle soul.’

If she’d shamelessly played the victim demanding compensation, or clung to my ankles insisting she loved Devon, things would’ve gotten messy.

Relieved, I released her hand. It was time to leave.

We were both victims, and after nearly killing each other, a heartfelt apology and comfort like this was more than enough.

Besides, if our younger brother—who cherished his sister beyond measure—saw us lingering together, it might just raise another deadly flag.

“Then I wish you good fortune, Lady Lirien.”

Just then, Lirien suddenly reached out and grasped the hem of my dress.

“W-wait, Countess, please!”

“What is it?”

I turned back with deliberate nonchalance, blinking slowly.

“C-countess… please give me a proper chance to apologize. I’ll invite you to my estate soon—let’s at least share a cup of tea—”

“Wouldn’t it be strange for the two of us to sit together and drink tea like that? This isn’t exactly a pleasant memory, after all.”

“I know, but… could you at least give me a chance to explain? I only met him by coincidence while traveling. He followed me to my lodging and kept pestering me until I finally read his letter—that’s all it was…”

Right, right. Not your fault at all. Devon was just persistent. Just as I’d expected. I nodded along—when a cheerful laugh echoed from the alley.

Lirien’s eyes brightened.

“Oh! That’s my friends.”

Friends? Lirien had friends? I rolled my eyes inwardly. In the original story, not a single friend attended her funeral.

Meanwhile, Lirien added shyly, “I met them recently at a pastry class. They must have come looking for me since I’m running late…”

“Lirien! When you send her on an errand, it always takes half the day—did you lose something important?”

A tall, sharp female voice rang through the quiet alley.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Lirien flinched, her shoulders twitching.

My gaze drifted to the box dropped near the alley’s entrance. Ah, so she’d been running an errand. Meanwhile, the women continued their chatter.

“Exactly. And that hairstyle—how ridiculous.”

“We heard she was a noble lady of high birth, so we tried mingling—turns out there’s nothing special about her.”

“It’s all past glory anyway. She’s so clueless—last time I told her, ‘You still live like a maiden, Lady Lirien,’ she just smiled happily without understanding a word. And what’s with bringing over baked goods when she’s barely learned how to make them?”

Thud. The dessert box was tossed aside, bouncing and skidding toward us.

Lowering my eyes, I saw Lirien’s crushed lips trembling between strands of silver hair cascading over her shoulders. She must have been seething with betrayal. She probably wanted to bite her tongue instead of her lip from sheer humiliation.

Yet, unable to vent her anger openly—not in front of me, the one who’d wronged her—she simply endured in silence.

Watching her hold back tears until blood beaded on her lip made my heart ache.

Sighing softly, I clasped the hand that still gripped my sleeve.

“My lady… do you know what kind of person frightens others the most?”

Lirien slowly lifted her head and shook it quickly. Her tears had already dried.

“A mad one.”

“…”

“So next time someone treats you as worthless, pretend to be mad—and bite them. Those big round eyes turning red might look adorably rabbit-like, but you’re far too precious to waste tears on trash like them.”

I smiled, pressing my cool fingers gently against the corner of her eye to soothe it. Thankfully, her murderous intent seemed gone; she nodded as if entranced.

Patting her shoulder, I walked over to the fallen cardboard box.

From its crumpled, gaping opening, a stray madeleine had bounced out. It smelled richly buttery and sweet—clearly made with care. How cruel to treat such effort as garbage.

I picked it up and dusted it off.

There’s an unwritten rule about dropped food: the three-second rule. Though it had clearly been longer than that.

“You offered tea as an apology, right? Forget that—let this be my apology instead.”

Without hesitation, I popped the madeleine into my mouth. Normally I disliked dry textures, but this one was pleasantly dense with a generous burst of lemon flavor.

After finishing it, I turned to find Lirien staring at me with slightly parted lips.

“C-countess…?”

For a noblewoman to eat a dropped madeleine from an alley—bare-handed, no less—must have been shocking.

Daintily pulling out a handkerchief from my sleeve, I wiped my hands and smiled warmly.

“Delicious. Thank you.”

Tucking the handkerchief away and turning to leave, I suddenly remembered something and spun halfway back.

Tapping Lirien lightly on the head—still rooted to the spot—I said,

“Oh, and by the way—I think that hairstyle suits you very well, Lady Lirien. Don’t ever change yourself or give up something you love just because of people like them. Understand?”

Lirien gaped blankly. Satisfied to see her nod—albeit a beat too late—I turned and walked away with a light heart.

“Then I’ll take my leave.”

And so, I headed toward the end of the alley with an easy smile.

[This is the timeline separator]

Left alone in the alley, Lirien stared after Etricia’s retreating figure, wide-eyed and utterly transfixed, unable even to blink.

After a while, shaking off her daze, she approached the box lying on the ground.

The crumpled, discarded cardboard box looked pitiful and sorrowful—just like her own situation.

She’d taken up pastry-making as a hobby to connect with others, a way to fight her loneliness. And until now, she’d thought that effort utterly futile.

Until Etricia ate it.

Etricia, who should have resented her most of all. Etricia, who should have found her the most inconvenient of all.

“Countess Bueil…”

Murmuring the name as she gazed blankly at the box, Lirien’s cheeks slowly flushed crimson.

Later, after retrieving the box and returning to the mansion, she spotted Devon’s letter on the table and let out a frustrated groan. The fog in her mind cleared, replaced by a fresh wave of anger.

“You rotten man! You despicable scoundrel!”

She hurled every insult she knew at him, yet her fury wouldn’t subside—so she shredded the scrap of paper until it was nothing but confetti.

How dare he, a married man, pretend to be single and lure someone who’d already refused him! And after having someone as magnificent as her!

Stomping on the scraps still didn’t satisfy her—tears welled up again as she thought of Etricia.

If she herself felt this betrayed, how deeply must Etricia have been hurt? If her own chest burned with a thousand fires of betrayal, what must Etricia’s heart feel like?

“And yet she…”

‘I came because I was worried about you.’

‘Don’t see that man anymore. You’re too precious for that.’

Despite the situation—enough to wound any woman’s pride—Etricia had remained graceful and thoughtful until the very end.

Choking back sobs, Lirien collapsed onto her bed and buried her face in the pillow.

‘I shouldn’t have let the Countess leave like that…’

Guilt threatened to drive her mad, yet admiration for Etricia surged within her like a tidal wave.

She wanted to see her again.

She longed for the woman whose noble bearing softened into kindness toward the weak, whose strong, clear eyes held a steely blue resolve, whose fiery red hair blazed as if no storm could ever extinguish it.

But visiting her just to satisfy her own selfish desire would be unforgivable.

Only for a moment. Lirien bit her lip firmly. In the end, selfishness won over conscience.

‘…Just once more. Just one more time. If she chases me away then, I’ll spend the rest of my life in quiet repentance.’

With resolve burning in her eyes, Lirien shot upright.

“Now that I think of it… didn’t the head maid mention recently that an acquaintance got hired at Count Bueil’s manor?”

She dashed out of her bedroom, calling for the head maid as she raced down to the second-floor hall.
