Edmund furrowed his brows fiercely and pretended to read the documents again as he spoke.
“When did your form of address change?”
“While you were away, Edmund, I went for walks in the garden and chatted with the maids. They all said Lady Etricia is so witty! Mari laughed so hard—I’ve never seen her laugh like that before!”
Ha. Edmund let out a harsh, mocking laugh.
While Etricia had briefly looked away, she had steadily been expanding her presence within the manor.
“Don’t grow too attached. She’s someone who will leave.”
“I know… I do. Once she finds a place of her own, she’ll leave.”
Lirien pouted for a moment, then let out a heavy sigh as she stole a glance at Edmund, who had already refocused on his work.
It pained her—both sorrowful and frustrating—to see him lock his heart away, allowing no one but his sister to get close.
The siblings had lost both parents on the same day.
The Duke was just and noble, earning the deep respect of his vassals; the Duchess was kind and benevolent, beloved by the people of the domain.
In an instant, both vanished—an attack by a sudden monster in the dead silence of dawn.
The creature slaughtered the manor’s servants and devoured the Duke and Duchess.
As she shoved the two children into the incinerator’s storage room, the Duchess smiled through twisted tears.
