Lowering my gaze, I caught sight of an arrow lodged in his shoulder. The sight—utterly foreign to me—stole my breath and made my jaw tremble uncontrollably.

“Let go of me! Even if I die, I must kill that wretch to ease my heart! Let me go!”

Thunk—he struggled against the knights dragging him away, driving the arrow deeper into his flesh.

“No, Edmund!”

A low groan escaped through Edmund’s clenched teeth.

For an instant, our eyes met—his twisted in pain, mine wide with shock. Had his eyes not softened gently, as if to reassure me, my heart wouldn’t ache this much. I stared up at him, my face contorted as if I might burst into tears at any moment.

Just as I was about to push away from his chest—

“Ar—are you all right, my lord?”

Startled by the knights’ anxious question, Edmund’s eyes sharpened like a hawk’s as he swept his gaze over them. They froze, breathless under his stare.

“This is hardly the time to worry about me.”

His growl made the knights flinch. With a grimace contorting his features, Edmund barked out orders.

“Bind that man and hand him over to the Imperial Search Guard. The rest of you, find the archer.”

“Yes, sir!”

Knights must have been stationed throughout every alleyway—their resounding reply echoed through the narrow streets. Soon after, they vanished, dragging Devon away despite his violent resistance, blood spattering from his mouth. Berita, drained of strength, was led off down the opposite alley with support from others.

Edmund kept his guard up until they had completely disappeared. Until then, I couldn’t utter a single word—my throat was too tight. I could only glare at him, my eyes burning red as if in protest.
