Verita was an abandoned child taken in by the Vuiel Duke’s household. Her father, a previous convict working in disguise, eloped with a maid, stealing from the Duke and leaving young Verita behind.
Moved by her plight, the Duke cared for her not as a maid but as an adopted daughter, providing her with a noble-like upbringing.
Perhaps that’s why. Verita grew up as a spoiled child, thinking a smile would excuse everything. Assuming herself a swan among swans, she took Ettrisha’s kindness for granted, manipulating her genuine affection.
She even felt a sense of superiority over Ettrisha, who was hurt by Devon, deceiving both Ettrisha and me.
Suppressing the rising fury, I spat out my words.
“Verita, you know what?”
She fluttered her eyelids, looking at me pitifully.
Such a despicable expression made me scoff.
“You haven’t even apologized to me yet.”
Verita froze like a statue. As she regained her senses, she grabbed my hand on the table.
“Sister, I’m sorry. I was just too shocked, too flustered.”
“Shut up, Verita.”
I harshly brushed off her heated touch.
Verita trembled, clutching her convulsing hand.
“I don’t want to hear any more of your stupid excuses.”
“Sister…”
‘Repaying the late Duke Vuiel’s kindness by betraying his daughter…’
I stood up coldly, my lips twisted.
“You want Devon? Fine, take him. You’ve always been good at stealing what’s mine, haven’t you?”
“How can you…”
Verita’s background of stealing trinkets, to the point where my efforts to defend her became futile, was well-known.
Knowing yet not reprimanding her for those past thefts has come back to haunt me today, in a way I could never have imagined in my absorbed state within the original story.
“But Verita, I’m different. You’re going to lose everything you’ve stolen.
Since neither the Duke of Vuiel nor your parents taught you the consequences of theft, it seems I must.
“Verita, from today you won’t be able to use the name of the Vuiel Duke’s family. You can’t even show your face in high society or at the royal court parties you’ve longed for, let alone attend them. The financial support you received monthly and the old mansion our father gifted you will also be confiscated.”
Verita’s tearful eyes trembled with shock, as if she had received a death sentence. Naturally, for someone who dreamed of ascending to the upper class.
“Sister, I’m sorry. Please forgive me, I.”
“Oh, why would I be your sister? We don’t share a drop of blood.”
“Sister…….”
“Don’t you dare speak my name again. Don’t even think about using our relationship anymore. If you do, everyone who knows you will point fingers and call you the daughter of a thief who repaid kindness with betrayal.”
I spat out sharply with a frosty voice, and Verita bit her lip and closed her eyes tightly. Tears fell onto her clenched hand holding her dress. I looked emotionlessly at her tears flowing down her hand.
I couldn’t feel a shred of pity.
The fleeting look of resentment and self-pity in her pale eyes only confirmed my thoughts.
As always, her little mind must be scheming how to appease my anger and reconnect with Devon.
“Don’t think of me as the Ettrisha in your memories, I’m cold towards those who deceive me.”
As our eyes met for a moment, Verita hastily looked down. I sneered and headed for the door, then remembered something I had forgotten.
Oh, right. I slightly lifted my dress, turned with a smile, and looked at Verita.
“Tell me when you marry my husband.”
I wiped the smile off my face and said coldly.
“Because then, I’ll have Devon murdered to make you a widow.”
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
