“Sigh.”

I let out a sigh, tired of the tedious argument.

Brushing off my shoulder where Antla had grabbed me as if shaking off dust, I coldly stared at her as she lay sprawled on the ground.

“Don’t you understand yet, Countess Dien? By now, you should realize that threatening me using Devon no longer works on me.”

I handed over the box I was carrying to Antla as if discarding it.

“Here, take this. It’s the evidence of your son’s affairs, all burnt.”

Caught off guard, Antla clumsily caught the distorted box, looking bewildered.

“What?”

“Oh, why such a face? You knew all along about Devon’s infidelities.”

Her reaction affirmed my claim. As expected, she was aware of their private lives.

With my hands behind my back, I leaned forward and whispered into Antla’s ear.

“In a short while, I’ll strip your precious son of everything and drive him out naked. Since even pocket money will disappear, you might want to start saving some cash. Take this as friendly advice, and don’t take it too hard. Also, I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time…”

I blew a strong breath on the fox shawl she was wearing, making her flinch. Smiling slyly as if performing a good deed, I remarked,

“That looks cheap.”

Why catch an innocent fox when she should be catching her own son? With this final jab, I turned around nimbly and walked away.

Glancing back, I saw Antla standing there, mouth agape like a goldfish, staring after me as I left.

“AAAAARGH!” Ignoring her delayed scream, I covered my ears.

‘So noisy.’

She might have a stroke from all this anger.

Descending the mansion’s stairs with Lirien, I spotted the butler, fidgeting at the gate.

‘Almost forgot about him.’

The butler, seeing me, hurried over.

“Have you finished your conversation, Madam?”

I raised an eyebrow skeptically.

‘Madam? Since when did he become so formal?’

Surely, this bat-like butler had listened to my conversation with Antla and was now assessing the situation.

Seeing my expression sour, the nervous butler licked his lips and started,

“Ma’am, actually, it was Countess Antla who ordered the mansion to be burned down. I was strongly against it…”

“Oh, really?”

My indifferent response left the butler sweating profusely and looking uneasy.

Mocking him inwardly, I tapped my chin thoughtfully and rolled my eyes.

“But now what, butler? The mansion’s burned down, and there’s no place for the staff to sleep or eat.”

“We’ll manage.”

“No, no. It’s improper for a hostess to have her household staff sleep outdoors, especially you, butler. You’ve worked hard to assist me these years.”

As I praised him gently, a faint smile appeared on the butler’s lips. It was a smile of triumph and relief, thinking I wouldn’t dismiss him even though he had sided with Antla.

“Not at all, as a butler, it’s my duty to…”

“So take a good rest.”

“Thank you… Eh?”

Confused, he looked at me as our eyes met. I wiped off the smile on my face and sternly said,

“With such poor understanding, it’s best you can’t continue bowing politely anymore. It’s time to look for another job, for you and all the staff of the mansion.”

I passed him with an indifferent gaze and walked through the gate.

The butler, struck as if by lightning, hastily followed.

“Just a moment, Madam…! Madam…!”

“Oh, right.”

I twirled my finger in the air and turned back to the butler.

“If you don’t want to meet again in court, send all the safe valuables to the Mipidian estate by tomorrow.”

“Madam…! I’m sorry, please forgive me, Madam…!”
The butler was equivalent to a civil servant in this world, a secure job sought after by many despite the high tuition and difficult curriculum.

If dismissed in disgrace, all privileges were revoked, as strict procedures were involved in the selection.

‘Well, you might as well take up farming.’

I smirked cynically and lightly ignored the butler chasing after me, boarding the carriage with Lirien.

On the way to the outskirts of the capital, to the Mipidian Count’s residence. The carriage, far superior in comfort compared to the rented one in the city, still felt uncomfortably cramped.

‘Came impulsively out of spite for Antla…’

I turned my gaze from the window to Lirien sitting opposite me. Our eyes met, and she smiled sheepishly before looking down.

The carriage was filled with an awkward silence.

‘This is uncomfortable…’

The only relief was that I wouldn’t encounter her brother. He was to return five days after Lirien’s supposed death.

Lost in thought and occasionally frowning, I felt her intense gaze and opened my eyes slightly. Lirien was watching me with curious eyes.

“Countess, what are you pondering so deeply?”

“I was just thinking how fortunate I am that Lady Lirien is helping me.”

I feigned ignorance and smiled lightly. Lirien blushed and gently touched her cheek.

“Oh… I didn’t do much to help…”

Just then, the carriage stopped.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
