To Vivian’s question, spoken with her face buried deep, Dietrich paused briefly before answering.

Was her sadness that noticeable? The answer to that was “no.”

When he’d first met Vivian, she hadn’t known how to hide her feelings at all. But after everything they’d been through, she had changed a little.

She had overcome her fear of monsters.

She’d conquered her timid nature—the one that once froze her in place—and now she could even fight back against her enemies.

Her once-terrible control over her expressions had improved significantly, if not perfectly.

Now, unless one paid close attention, it was difficult to discern her true feelings.

Yet Dietrich had quickly realized Vivian was upset for two reasons.

First, simply because he cared about her deeply. His eyes always followed her whenever she was within sight—how could he not notice?

Second, because her expression reminded him of his own not long ago.

Her eyes pretended to be fine on the surface but betrayed a strange emptiness.

It felt familiar.

Vivian now looked just like he had back when he’d nearly lost his parents.
