Lea Hamilton’s funeral was scheduled to be held at the largest church in Rubec’s capital, Lebon.

Lea arrived at the church two hours before the ceremony was set to begin.

She had a bit of trouble shaking off Pauline outside the church—after all, she couldn’t let anyone see her grief.

‘Don’t tremble. Face reality.’

Lea clasped her own hands, clad in black mesh gloves. Could there be anyone else in the world who had to witness their own funeral?

A faint vibration, as if an earthquake had struck beneath her feet, traveled up her body. It was surely the beginning of despair before an overwhelming spectacle.

‘You must grow stronger. You’re still alive, after all.’

Lea kept repeating these words like a mantra, encouraging herself. Soon, as if having steeled her resolve, she stepped into the church without hesitation.

The scene inside was no different from any other chapel—majestic and sacred, with a cross standing tall, and vibrant light streaming through the stained-glass windows behind it.

Yet all Lea could see was the wooden coffin containing her own body.

Without stopping, Lea walked straight toward the coffin. Reality had finally caught up with her.

“Oh, God!”

Though Lea usually trusted science more than faith, seeing her own corpse made her instinctively call out to God.

The coffin was filled with white lilies. Inside lay herself, barely twenty years old, fast asleep.

‘Can it really be this pitiful?’

Though people had tried to prepare the body, her face was so horribly disfigured it was unrecognizable. Lea couldn’t even manage a sad expression—she simply shed silent tears.

‘I’m sorry. I killed you, Lea Hamilton.’

She never imagined loving a man would exact such a cruel price.

“I promise—I’ll send you and Father…”

Overwhelmed by emotion, Lea couldn’t finish her sentence. But she had no time now to wallow in despair; she didn’t even deserve that luxury.

“I’ll drag Allen MacDowell right to the gates of hell. Just to that point—no further.”

She’d heard that humans tremble in utter terror before stepping through hell’s gates. He would suffer excruciating torment—neither dead nor alive, with no chance of turning back.

“I’ll gladly become Allen MacDowell’s personal hell.”

Lea wiped away her tears. It was still too early to break down sobbing—she couldn’t let the carefully applied makeup for today be ruined.

“When everything’s over, I’ll follow you soon. Farewell, Lea Hamilton.”

Lea calmly bid herself goodbye.

Then she examined the body—she needed to find the necklace her father had given her. But the necklace was nowhere to be seen.

‘Why isn’t it here? Could it have been lost?’

Just then, an elderly priest entered the church. He seemed to be the bishop in charge of the funeral.

“Bishop, wasn’t there any personal belonging with the body?”

Lea asked bluntly.

“Ah, the Courtois Duke’s people, who found the body, probably took care of the belongings separately—they’d need to be handed over to the bereaved family.”

‘The Duke Courtois?’

This was turning into a troublesome situation.

[This is the timeline separator]

Soon, it was time for the funeral to begin. The musician for the funeral march had already arrived, yet Lea was the only mourner present.

“Are there more mourners coming?”

The bishop, puzzled by the empty hall, approached Lea to ask.

“I alone am enough.”

“Pardon?”

“You may begin the funeral.”

“But the seats aren’t… Very well.”

After glancing around the hall, the bishop quickly agreed, realizing no one else would come.

‘I know it—Allen MacDowell will definitely show up.’

Lea prayed, hands clasped together.

Please, let Allen come…

Finally, the bishop began praying for poor Lea, who had left this world so young.

Just as his heartfelt prayer reached its peak, as Lea had anticipated, movement stirred near the entrance.

He had finally arrived.

“Lea!”

Though his voice was agitated, his footsteps were calm.

The bishop stopped praying and turned toward the door, but Lea remained in prayer.

Knowing exactly who had come, she tried her best to stay composed rather than be flustered.

“May I ask who you are?”

The bishop asked politely, though his voice carried clear discomfort toward this rude stranger.

After all, proper etiquette for a mourner was to sit quietly and observe the ceremony.

Lea adjusted her black veil and rose from her seat, preparing to face him.

And at last, she saw him.

The man with gleaming golden hair and striking features.

And also, her own disastrous choice—stained beyond redemption by unforgivable sins.

“Mr. Allen MacDowell?”

“Yes, that’s me. And you are?”

“Grace Bizac.”

He’d be racking his brain right now.

Who is this woman?

Lea never had a friend like her.

Lea could almost hear Allen rapidly scanning his memory.

He was the man who knew everything about Lea—what she liked and disliked, which jewelry and dresses she wore each day of the week.

“How did you know… Lea? Were you friends?”

“Friends… No.”

“Then who might you be?”

“My family and the Hamilton Trading Company had ties long ago, so I couldn’t help but come.”

“I see. Thank you.”

Only then did relief wash over Allen’s face.

Lea gave a slight bow, offering her condolences.

As soon as she stepped aside, Allen staggered toward the coffin.

“Lea.”

Allen lifted the thin cloth covering the body.

Though his hands trembled, his eyes burned with desperate need for confirmation.

The final verification required on his path to becoming the new head of the Hamilton Trading Company.

“How could this happen…!”

The corpse, dressed in a wedding gown, was unmistakably Lea Hamilton.

Pretending to be overcome with sorrow, Allen collapsed beside the coffin, weeping bitterly.

“You should’ve listened to me! Why did you have to be so reckless…!”

Veins bulged on Allen’s hand as he gripped the coffin.

He shook with sobs, as if unable to bear the tragic end of his fiancée.

Seizing the moment, Lea approached and gently patted his shoulder in comfort.

“I don’t even know what words of consolation to offer you.”

Lea was surprised she could comfort the very man who’d killed her—with such grace in her voice.

‘You are Grace Bizac now.’

She silently repeated this to herself, determined not to slip up in front of Allen.

Grace’s body was exquisitely beautiful—delicate and petite, with luminous golden hair, fair skin, and violet eyes tinged with blue that sparkled like gems.

Not to mention her breath, as soft and comforting as a gentle breeze.

Even another woman would be enchanted.

Allen, having barely composed himself, turned back to Lea, playing the part of the grieving fiancé.

“Thank you—for staying until the very end of my fiancée’s journey.”

“Don’t mention it. Truly, it’s just so tragic.”

“No, you’ve done what I couldn’t. I searched desperately for Lea, but in the end, I couldn’t prevent this tragedy.”

Allen briefly explained to Lea why she’d fled, and the situation at the Hamilton Trading Company back home.

“I pleaded with Lea and her father until the very end, but the merchant insisted on selling anything profitable and ignored my words.”

“Goodness…!”

Lea painfully realized she’d been arrogant enough to think she truly knew someone.

‘I didn’t know anything about Allen at all.’

“It went against my principles and morals, so I found the courage to speak up. Still, I never dreamed Lea would abandon even me and flee like that.”

He kept shedding tears as he spoke.

Lea pulled a handkerchief from her small purse and handed it to him. Though she felt an urge to strangle him right then and there, she bit her lip and held back.

“Save your tears.”

Unconsciously, her voice cracked. She loathed how he could spew lies and pretense right before her eyes.

“I think… she wouldn’t have wanted that. She’d probably wish the man she loved wouldn’t grieve over her for too long.”

“I see. Thank you for your comfort.”

“The late Miss Hamilton surely understands your feelings as her fiancé.”

“But I’ll regret for the rest of my life that I didn’t persuade Lea more strongly that day.”

Allen continued speaking as he wiped his tears with the handkerchief Lea had given him.

“Lea was so stubborn—she rarely listened to me.”

Lea looked at Allen with pity, then turned away.

But he gently caught her again with a soft tone.

“Miss Bizac, I’m sorry, but I’d like to know more about Lea’s final moments. When might you have time to speak with me?”

“Pardon?”

Just as Lea turned to reply, another man’s voice rang out solemnly through the chapel.

“Grace.”

Lea’s gaze instinctively followed the voice, as if reacting to a primal impulse.

A man in black uniform strode toward Lea and Allen.

Tall and broad enough to fill the narrow aisle, he was entirely clad in black, his face as cold as ice yet radiating fiery intensity.

His piercing black eyes instantly overwhelmed anyone who met them.

Above all, his sheer masculinity made him appear absolutely stronger than Allen.

“Duke Courtois.”

As Lea greeted him warmly and approached, he naturally wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“!?”

Lea flinched involuntarily at his unexpected gesture.

‘What’s gotten into this man? He never acted like this before.’

“Miss Hamilton’s fiancé has finally arrived.”

Lea lifted her head gently and whispered to him.

Allen scrutinized Lea and Terren, trying to decipher their relationship.

He probably assumed they were lovers.

“At least the chief mourner has come. I was worried she’d end up buried in a common grave as an unidentified body.”

His words carried clear reproach toward Allen for arriving so late.

“He was very distraught.”

“Then, Grace, have we done all we needed to do?”

“Yes.”

Just then, Allen, who had been silently observing, approached Lea.

“Miss Bizac, may I ask you to introduce the gentleman beside you? I’d like to thank him personally.”

“Duke Terren Courtois.”

“Ah…! Of course—the famed Duke Terren Courtois. I’m Allen MacDowell. Thank you for handling my fiancée’s funeral. I’ll repay this kindness.”

Allen seemed more astonished at actually meeting the legendary Terren than grieving his fiancée’s death.

But Terren stared at him with indifference, then turned to look at his fiancée.

“Let’s go.”

Still holding Grace’s shoulder, Terren turned to leave.

Yet Allen wasn’t ready to let them go so easily.

“Wait—one more thing, please.”

He stepped forward, addressing not Terren but her.

“What would you like to know?”

“Was there anything Lea left behind? A necklace, perhaps…?”

“A necklace?”

“Ah… No, never mind. I’ll look into it myself.”

Seeing Lea’s puzzled reaction, Allen quickly stepped aside.

“Was it an important necklace?”

Lea was curious what Allen would say.

“It’s been passed down through generations of the trading company—I wanted to protect it at all costs.”

“Then it must hold the company’s history and secrets. But I know nothing about it.”

As Lea spoke to Allen, her eyes shifted toward Terren—someone else surely had the necklace.

“I… see.”

Lea turned back to Allen with an apologetic expression, quietly suppressing the rage welling up inside her.

“Your fiancée will be buried in the churchyard here.”

“Duke Courtois, I can’t leave Lea buried in foreign soil.”

“Wouldn’t that be better than being abandoned in her homeland?”

Terren calmly addressed Allen.

“What do you mean by that?”

Allen looked deeply startled, as if Terren had seen straight through him.

“You already know what I mean, even without explanation.”

“But I could still request Galdensia to take custody of the body.”

Grace, who had been listening, interjected.

“Don’t you want your beloved fiancée to rest in peace?”

If only Allen would stop being stubborn, Lea’s remains would at least be safe.

At those words, Allen fell silent.

Allen had wanted to take Lea’s body back to Galdensia for a perfect cover-up.

But now that he’d confirmed her death, there was no need to insist further.

‘The dead can’t speak.’

Just then, a mournful funeral march echoed through the church.

Lea’s gaze drifted naturally from the coffin to Allen.

‘This requiem is for you, you bastard!’
