The Duke of the North, Sion Velpast, known as the ‘Messenger of the Battlefield.’

A figure of terror to countries bordering the empire but a hero and savior to the imperial citizens.

Quietly, with his serene blue eyes, the Duke looked at those showing respect and awe towards him.

After a while, the Duke silently started walking. As he passed me, I caught the scent of dawn forest.

‘Is it the Duke’s scent?’

I had sensed this forest fragrance before, both earlier and in the shaking carriage. And each time, my heart fluttered and raced.

It was strange. I couldn’t detect any scent from Arcadia, even when close by.

The large crowd parted into two streams, making way for the Duke.

Following Arcadia, I whispered, “Commander, does the Duke use any perfume?”

“No idle chatter. Stand tall and lift your head. We are from the North.”

Snapping back to reality, I straightened up and glanced around lightly. Everyone, not just to the Duke and Arcadia, but surprisingly, some nobles’ admiring gazes were also directed at me.

I held my head high, looking at the Duke’s back.

We are the North. I am part of this North.

‘We have come to meet His Majesty the Emperor.’

The audience hall began right from the entrance of the palace.

Immediately upon entering, I saw golden double doors, engraved with golden Luchella symbols.

The knights guarding the palace were startled to see the Duke, hastily placing their swords to their chests and kneeling in respect.

A palace attendant announced loudly, “The Shield of the Empire, the Duke of Velpast from the North, has arrived!”

‘Is the Emperor, His Majesty, really inside?’

My heart started racing uncontrollably.

I placed my hand over my chest and took shallow breaths.

Soon, the massive doors began to open from the inside.

Following the Duke and Arcadia, I bowed as I had learned.

As the doors fully opened, the attendant said, “His Majesty is already here. He invites you to enter.”

The Duke then lifted his head, and I slowly did the same.

Before us unfolded a long, blue velvet carpet, seemingly stretching at least two leagues. It spanned all the way to the opposite wall of the hall.

At the end of that path, beneath a giant golden sword carved on the wall, stood the silver-haired Emperor.
On the silver platform stood several steps, and atop it, the Emperor’s throne made of silver. An elderly man with silver hair sat on it, his back straight, radiating a bright aura even from a distance.

‘That man is the Emperor.’

“We are to stand here, by the door,” Arcadia said. I numbly took my position behind Arcadia, my direct superior.

The Duke slowly approached the Emperor. When he reached the center of the hall, he placed one hand over his heart and knelt on one knee.

“Duke Sion Velpast of the North, in the presence of the Emperor, the Sun of the Empire!”

“Rise, Duke.”

The Emperor’s booming voice filled the hall.

‘That’s the voice of His Majesty.’

My hand trembled involuntarily, clutching the hem of my dress tightly, but the trembling didn’t cease.

‘It’s like the sound of scraping an ancient, rough tree.’

A voice that seemed capable of pushing a rolling boulder uphill, strong and forceful.

But soon, it was apparent.

‘He’s deliberately using a loud voice towards the Duke. It’s not a sign of strength.’

I raised my gaze again, looking towards the Emperor.

The Emperor’s eyes were fixed on the Duke.

‘That man is my grandfather.’

I couldn’t help but lower my head again.

That’s when Arcadia sighed softly.

I looked up.

The Emperor gestured subtly, and from behind the platform, unseen until now, someone emerged.

The Duke of Rahert.

A feeling of darkness seemed to engulf my vision.

‘Why are you… so quickly at the Emperor’s side, Rahert? The tongue of a serpent.’

I clenched my teeth involuntarily.

“You’re a bit late, Duke Velpast. It’s been a very long time. So… anything eventful recently? Everything well?”

The Emperor asked in a tone of welcome.

Though the conversation was distant, in the vast hall, every sound echoed loudly. The Duke’s response was also audible.

“Thanks to Your Majesty’s grace, I have been able to keep my life through countless battlefields.”

“Indeed. I heard the recent war against the barbarians was successful. Expelling them all from the south is commendable. I acknowledge your achievement.”

“Your Majesty is too kind.”

“That’s good, though I heard there was an unexpected mishap, but seeing you safe is a relief to me.”

A mishap?

Could it be… that mishap refers to…

“Are you referring to the attempt to poison me and the assassination attempt on my aide, Your Majesty?”

The Duke asked.

The Emperor responded.

“Duke, there are many eyes and ears here, so I would advise against making statements that could cause unnecessary misunderstandings for the South.”

“An unnecessary misunderstanding, Your Majesty?”

“Duke.”

The Emperor’s voice deepened, almost whispering.

“Are you trying to provoke the South again?”

Short scene 2:

Wei Jing Mo stared intently at Feng Bai Su who was about to go out, wanting to say, “Be careful on the road.”

Before he could speak, Feng Bai Su suddenly bent down and bit his cheek.

Wei Jing Mo: “…”
