I dashed recklessly through the thickly overgrown forest.

What would happen if I were caught was as clear as daylight.

If Count Seize had any intention of letting me live, he wouldn’t have escalated matters this far. The sound of rain and the harsh rustling of bushes being torn through mingled chaotically.

The threats chasing from behind drew steadily closer. It felt as though they’d grab me by the collar at any moment, so even though my breath came in gasps, I couldn’t afford to stop. Only one thought filled my mind.

Fortunately, amidst this misfortune, the Seize territory bordered the Etra Kingdom, so there should be stationed soldiers there.

If I could just reach that place, I’d survive. The problem was I had no idea which direction to run. Already in unfamiliar terrain and now caught in the rain, I was barely managing to evade my pursuers.

“Your Highness Bi, they seem to be right on our heels!”

Matthias shouted urgently from behind. Spurred by his words, I urged the horse on even harder—but it was only natural that the steed, carrying two people through the mud, was rapidly losing strength.

The horse, panting heavily as it ran, tripped over a tree root and tumbled forward.

Before I could brace myself, I rolled helplessly onto the ground. Swallowing a groan of sharp pain, I crawled toward Matthias, who lay sprawled nearby.

“Are you all right, Lord Matthias?”

“I—I’m fine.”

Matthias replied with an expression that clearly said otherwise, subtly rubbing his ankle. He must have twisted it when he fell from the horse. He glanced quickly behind us and spoke to me with grim resolve.

“The bandits will catch up any moment—please go on ahead.”

“How can I possibly leave you behind? If you’ve got the strength to say that, then get up quickly!”
