The royal jousting tournament was entertainment enjoyed by all citizens of the kingdom.

The massive circular arena was packed with people who were already buzzing with excitement even before the matches began. It was impossible to tell who they were most eager to see.

Kahilrn de Hillik, the current scandalous figure of Hillik Kingdom and a Sword Master, had become the talk of the town. Rumors that he would actually appear in person—despite no one having ever clearly seen his face—had caused black-market tickets to circulate wildly from early on.

Those wanting to verify whether he truly lived up to his reputation or was merely a hollow man bewitched by a seductress paid extra to secure those illicit tickets.

Amidst the crowd brimming with skepticism, voices staunchly supporting him had already begun cheering for Kahilrn.

The royal family occupied the best shaded seats. The king and queen, the second prince, and Floria were all seated. The queen was visibly clicking her tongue, seemingly displeased by the loud cheers calling out Kahilrn’s name.

I sat to the side of their seating area. Though the autumn sun shone directly down, its warmth wasn’t harsh; in fact, being in the front row allowed me a vivid view of the arena, making it a satisfying spot.

As the king opened the event with a ceremonial greeting, fanfare blared and fireworks exploded. The announcer raised a flag and shouted:

“The royal jousting tournament shall now commence!”

Randols’s opponent, dodging his extended lance, tumbled off his horse.

When the flag signaling Randols’s victory rose, he thrust his arm high toward the sky. The crowd’s excited roars continued until Randols exited the arena.

Then, in an instant, the entire venue fell into an astonishing silence—because Kahilrn had appeared.

“Black banner—His Highness Prince Kahilrn de Hillik!”

Mounted on a black steed, Kahilrn rode toward the center of the arena. Since he always wore a mask, rumors about his appearance had run rampant.

Some claimed he bore hideous scars; others insisted he was so hideously ugly no one could bear to look at him. Yet standing beneath the sun, he looked more splendid than anyone else. The stunned spectators, mouths agape, erupted into a unified cheer.
