The Hillik Royal Palace was so beautiful that people came from other countries to study its architecture, yet the dungeon beneath it was its complete opposite.

The dim interior was barely lit by sparse torches hanging here and there, and the dampness—so severe that water dripped steadily from the ceiling—filled the air with a strong moldy stench.

It was said this place held only those guilty of heinous crimes, and apparently, their treatment was just as harsh.

Now I understood why Kahilrn had looked so displeased when I’d insisted on meeting Floria. Had it not been for his council meeting, he surely would have accompanied me himself. For me, who wanted to face Floria alone, this worked out perfectly.

‘Good thing I listened to Kahilrn.’

Had I ignored his warning to keep my nose and mouth covered, harm might have come to my child.

“Please be careful not to trip.”

The knights surrounding me on all sides, acting under Kahilrn’s orders, fretted anxiously with every step I took. They seemed even more distressed at the thought of dirt marring my dress than I was myself—clear proof of just how sternly Kahilrn must have instructed them.

“I knew you’d come.”

Unlike me, who received such attentive care, Floria’s situation was utterly wretched.

Trapped behind iron bars through which cold drafts flowed, she retained none of her former grace. Her hair was tangled, her clothes filthy, and her unwashed appearance was thoroughly disheveled; her once-clear voice was now hoarse and cracked.

“You’ve come to gawk at me, haven’t you? Well? Are you satisfied now?”

Floria glared at me, grinding her teeth. Suddenly, I recalled the day I’d first seen her in the palace.

Standing beneath brilliant sunlight, she had truly shone so radiantly I could have believed an angel had descended from heaven.

Meanwhile, I had knelt before her, pressing my forehead to the floor, begging for my life. Yet in the blink of an eye, our positions had completely reversed.
