The charm of possession was supposed to be the twist of the original story, but this isn’t what I wanted, was it?

“Why is there suddenly talk of a maid entering the palace here?”

Wasn’t I just left with the prospect of being attacked by pigeons?

The Countess and Eliya, in their panic and failing to manage their expressions, dragged me by the arms to a corner.

“Why did that wicked one call you to the castle?”

“Mom, that’s not what’s important right now. This is an opportunity. You know that royal maids are selected from among the nobility, right? I don’t know what that fox-like girl is thinking by making my sister a maid, but if played right, our family can rise again!”

“Oh, that’s right!”

The Countess, who had just been red and blue with anger, calling all this Cinderella’s trickery, suddenly looked intrigued. The Countess and Eliya pressured me with their bright eyes.

“Yes, even if it’s distasteful, just endure a little and an opportunity for revenge might come, right?”

“Right, sister. It’s a chance to build connections with influential people in the palace and elevate the prestige of the Violet family. In doing so, I can marry into a good family too. You know how much that would help our family.”

Eliya shot me a look full of longing. Our family, our family, but in reality, it’s clear she just wants to marry into a noble family.

“If it were me, I would have gladly gone!”

“Really?”

I turned my gaze to the servant who was watching us huddled in the corner with a sour look.

“Do I really have to go? I mean, did the princess personally pick me?”

“If there’s an unavoidable circumstance, Miss Eliya can go in your place.”

“So that’s how it is. You should go into the castle.”

It would be better for meeting notable people. Unlike me, who was relieved, Eliya’s expression soured. She knows too. Entering the castle means a slow death. That cunning and sly girl.

I glanced at Eliya, her makeup smeared by tears.

I was tempted to give her a big thump on the head, but then I saw her secretly grabbing and shaking the Countess’s dress. She was pleading for support. Sure enough, the Countess began persuading me.

“Eliya is still young, and ignorant. I’m worried she might cause an accident in the castle.”

The Countess, bolstered by Eliya, seemed triumphant. This girl, always talking about marriage and romance, suddenly acts like a child only at times like this.

“You’re her sister. I think I can rest easy if it’s you.”

I felt the pressure to enter the castle through the grip on my arm. The Count, listening to all this and just coughing without saying a word, seemed to share their sentiments. Just as expected of a family.

‘I should have run away yesterday, darn it.’

“Sister, you’re going to the castle, right?”

They wouldn’t be implying I wouldn’t go, right? Three pairs of eyes, almost threatening, turned to me. I sighed inwardly and smiled broadly.

“Of course, it was a joke. Obviously, I have to be the one to enter the castle.”

Seeing the Count and Countess and Eliya visibly relax, I turned to the servant.

“Give me a few days to prepare before entering the palace.”

“His Highness has ordered you to be brought directly. You must leave tomorrow, so finish your preparations tonight.”

The servant spoke sharply. Despite being just a name in the Violet family, such rude behavior from a servant!

After all, who would be friendly to the Violet family now? Entering the castle means being surrounded and tormented by these hostile people.

‘Am I crazy? Walking into the tiger’s den.’

“I understand. I will prepare.”
Concealing my inner thoughts, I politely answered the servant.

Buoyed by newfound hope, my family had bright faces throughout dinner. Everyone was unusually kind, smiling and taking care of me.

When I said I was going to the capital, I managed to detach Elijah, who was pleading for the Matilda Boutique catalog, and returned to my room.

“What’s with the catalog.”

I snorted as soon as I closed the door.

“I should just enter the castle myself and get it.”

It was no longer my concern how Floria would turn out. I didn’t need to worry about people who were pushing me into the tiger’s den for their own good. Remembering their eagerness to send me to the castle, I even felt unjustly burdened for having interfered so much before.

‘I was planning to escape today anyway.’

Shrugging, I took out a locked suitcase from under the bed and removed items that were only taking up space and weight.

Then, I crammed bread and jerky into the now lighter suitcase. Ignoring the frightened expression of gaining weight, these were all excuses for hunger.

It wouldn’t be much, but it would be filling for a while. It was fortunate that it was summer and easier to move.

“I would have become a matchstick girl.”

Lost in silly thoughts, the night deepened. The dark window outside was tranquil, with only intermittent cries of the night.

‘It’s time.’

My eyes snapped open, and I got up from the bed. Glancing outside the window, it was quiet without a soul in sight.

“Hm. Perfect air for escaping.”
