Yet, compared to Agares, whose limit of power was hard to estimate, they were relatively easy to devise strategies against.

“Humans are quite greedy.”

Therefore, it wasn’t difficult to find among humans, a lackey for the demons.

By planting a sort of spy, a whisperer, it wasn’t completely impossible to topple the imperial family or the duchy.

“Avoid a frontal war until we are sufficiently prepared.”

One also had to be so clever that nobody would dare to point a sword hastily.

The failure of the first DemonHuman war was not to be repeated.

Thus, Demon King Baal ordered Jefar to give the ‘Book of the 16th Demon’ to the house most opposed to the current imperial family and the Artina house.

The quickwitted Jefar collected information from the human world and identified the family that was the most hostile to the Artina family.

The Duke of De Font.

Jefar made the ‘Book of the 16th Demon’ noticeable to the De Font family.

Very cleverly, so that the Duke of De Font wouldn’t realize that all this was a trick of the demons using the De Font family.

As expected, the Duke of De Font had the book used by a loyal knight under his command.

The first request the contracted knight made to Jefar, on the Duke of De Font’s behalf.

It was the assassination of the Artina princess.

Hearing this from Jefar, Baal had a satisfied smile on his lips.

“Did the Lord of the Artina family kill Jefar, or was it the loathsome ruler of the East Demon World?”

“Whichever it is, isn’t it all the same? You achieved your goal of finding a useful pawn.”

Baal, hearing Batzago’s words, smirked and nodded.

Yes, he could use it to topple the Arcadia imperial family and the Artina Duchy.

“It would be good if the pawn was useful.”

Deep in the night, behind the bookshelf in the Duke of De Font’s room, a secretive space.

In the secret space of the Duke, unknown to the Duchess, the Young Sir Ricard, and the Young Lady Seres, only a small lantern was illuminating the Duke of De Font’s face.

His gray eyes shone yellow in the faint light.

From afar, the sound of hunting dogs barking was heard.

It was an order to track down and tear apart a runaway slave.

When the hunting dogs returned, there would be pieces of the runaway slave stuck between their cruel and sharp teeth.

But there was no sign of sympathy for the soontobe killed slave from either the Duke or the knight kneeling before him.

Thud.

The Duke of De Font spoke as he placed a thick book, with strange symbols that were hard to identify, on the mahogany desk.

“Highranking demon, nothing special.”

“That’s right. There seems to be quite a difference between a 10thranked demon and those below, a 16thranked demon is nothing.”

At this point, the demons’ names were not known in the human world.

Ultimately, there were only two ways to summon a demon.

Obtain a demon’s book, the existence of which was uncertain, and use it for summoning, or let the demon himself propose a contract and reveal his name.

The kneeling knight, under the Duke’s command, had used the ‘Book of the 16th Demon’ to contract with Jefar.

His first order was to kill the Artina princess and bring her body.

But less than half a day after the order, the seal proving the contract with Jefar disappeared, and then even the subtle sense of connection was abruptly severed.

There was only one case in which a contract with a demon was terminated without mutual agreement.

The extinction of the demon.

Thud, thud.

The sound of his index finger tapping on the armrest of the chair, suggesting his dissatisfaction, became increasingly rapid.

“Even though it was a rather highranking demon…”

“……”

“Who do you think it could be, the one who captured and killed him in such a short time?”

“It must be the Duke of Artina.”

“No, the Duke was at the royal palace. He couldn’t have responded so quickly…”

The Duke frowned as he fiddled with his glasses.

There was something else.

Something powerful enough to extinguish a highranking demon in an instant was hovering around that hateful Artina girl.

Whether it was a spirit, or something else they didn’t yet know.

The Duke of De Font’s eyes narrowed.

His brain, brighter in strategy and conspiracy than in brute force, whirred rapidly.

His index finger, which had been hitting the armrest at regular intervals, suddenly stopped.

A chilly silence swept over.

“Collect the devil’s books. All of them.”

“Are you considering borrowing the power of the demons?”

“Do you think it makes sense that the devil’s book, which was hard to find, and especially the 16 devil’s books belonging to highranking demons, easily appeared before us?”

“……?”

“It means they also want our power.”

It seems like one of the demons is trying to use us as chess pieces, shouldn’t we first become the chessboard and line up our pieces?

“I like a strategy of biting and biting back.”

Whoever it was that left the 16 devil’s books for us to collect.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
