After treating Ormia, Liam headed to the basement of the mansion.

At the basement entrance guarded by soldiers, the Grand Duke Wilboyer, Hal, and the Three Elders were already waiting.

Although the Grand Duke had withdrawn from administrative duties and rarely attended such gatherings, Liam had specifically summoned him together with the Three Elders.

Ethan was nowhere to be seen.

Ethan’s presence had allowed them to move freely across the battlefield under the Emperor’s orders. Despite being cousins, he was a dependable ally.

“Let’s go.”

Liam did not greet them.

He wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries.

A musty odor seeped through the windowless underground corridor—the stale, lingering scent of long-accumulated death clinging to every crevice of the stone walls.

“I’ve received reports that Mona, Milo’s granddaughter, is tracking down traces of them. Though they’ve likely fallen into the hands of human traffickers—making the situation grim—I will find them no matter what.”

As they entered, Liam reported on the capital’s current situation and other relevant matters.

Private conversations between Liam and the Grand Duke had ceased long ago. This rare face-to-face meeting occurred only because of such formal reports.

From somewhere in the corridor came a muffled sob. The torches flickered against the walls, casting grotesque, shifting shadows. The atmosphere grew even more ominous.

“I’ll take the princess to the capital.”

“The Emperor won’t let her go.”
