I'll Be the Queen of the Enemy Country (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 5
Elise instinctively burrowed toward warmth. Something soft enveloped her snugly.
Is this heaven?
With the perfect temperature, a gentle breeze, and a comforting scent—how could she possibly think of hell?
Elise slowly opened her eyes. The bright light stung—how long had it been since she’d last seen such radiance?
The sharp pain made her squeeze her eyes shut again.
“Would you like to sleep a bit longer?”
Someone spoke to her.
“No, I’ll get up now.”
If this place lay beyond the mortal world, she had no time to waste lazing about.
She needed to find someone, beg forgiveness for her sins, and plead for another chance.
“Oh dear, since when do you speak so formally, Miss?”
“Miss”—a title she hadn’t heard in nearly eight years.
It had been exactly eight years since Elise inherited the viscountcy.
“I can’t let you sleep any longer, even if you wanted to. His Highness Chase is coming today, isn’t he?”
Chase? His Highness?
Sensing something odd, Elise narrowed her eyes.
Her pupils, now adjusted to the light, quickly focused.
“Are you in pain anywhere?”
The face suddenly leaning toward her looked familiar—yet strangely unfamiliar.
“…Regina?”
Elise abruptly grabbed Regina’s outstretched wrist.
“Who are you?”
“Ouch, Miss! That hurts! You’re full of energy this morning! It’s me, Regina. Are you sleepwalking with your eyes open? Or are you dreaming?”
Regina’s brow furrowed in concern.
Regina? And so young?
Still doubtful, Elise scanned her surroundings. Familiar sights gradually came into view.
Her old writing desk, chair, wardrobe—all exactly as she remembered from the viscount’s manor—and even the scenery outside the window matched perfectly.
“We’ll keep His Highness waiting if you carry on like this. Please get up, Miss.”
Regina, neatly dressed in her apron, snatched away the blanket Elise had been clutching.
Beneath her thin nightgown, Elise’s pale, smooth legs were fully exposed. Her eyes widened in shock.
“The scars are gone?”
In the autumn of her twentieth year, Elise had suffered a terrible accident during a gate investigation.
Her legs had been badly wounded then, leaving deep scars—but now they were flawless.
Elise tensed. Slowly turning her head toward Regina, she asked,
“Regina, how old am I this year?”
“You’re acting really strange today, you know? You’re nineteen this year, Miss.”
“Nineteen? Then what month is it now?”
“Oh dear, Miss, what’s gotten into you?”
Though Regina eyed her suspiciously, she answered readily enough.
“It’s the Gathering Month. Are you so eager to become an adult? Just hold on a few more days—it’ll be the new year soon.”
By season, it was the very end of winter.
“Are you nervous? His Highness Chase said he’s bringing your engagement ring!”
Elise bolted upright from her bed.
Winter of her nineteenth year—and an engagement ring!
She leapt out of bed and strode straight into the bathroom, turning on the faucet. Cold water poured over her head.
Her body shuddered violently, jolting her fully awake.
“Miss! You’ll catch a cold! Even if you’re in a hurry, you can’t just wash up fully clothed! Come out quickly!”
Regina stamped her feet in frustration, but Elise refused to budge.
‘I’ve come back—to nineteen? Or am I just dreaming?’
Yet the pain felt far too vivid to be a dream.

Even now, her ankle—crushed under Gabriel’s foot—throbbed dully.
Her fingertips, worn raw from drawing magic circles, burned fiercely.
‘What I went through wasn’t a dream. Then…’
Had her dying wish been granted?
Was the Regression Circle real after all?
Elise turned toward the mirror in the bathroom and frantically touched her own face.
She was alive—and she’d returned!
A wave of joy surged through her body and then vanished. Doubt immediately followed.
‘Who activated the Regression Circle?’
She sifted through faint memories until a desperate voice calling out to her echoed in her mind.
Karan.
He—the very man embroiled in scandal with her—had come searching for her.
Could Karan have activated it? But he wasn’t a mage.
Activating a Regression Circle, a spell of unimaginable power, required at least an Archmage-level wizard.
Had he been hiding his identity as a mage all along?
Had he concealed his possession of mana vast enough to cast such a spell?
If so, it was possible.
Still, her doubts didn’t entirely vanish.
Archmages received extraordinary honors regardless of their origins.
An Archmage could single-handedly restore a family exiled for rebellion.
Every nation would boast endlessly if an Archmage emerged from its lands.
Yet he’d kept it hidden?
In Titris—a land scorned as forsaken by the gods for failing to produce mages?
It was all too bewildering.
“Miss! His Highness Chase has arrived!”
Elise froze at Regina’s words. The excitement in her eyes instantly turned icy.
Now was the time to steel her nerves and deal with Chase.
[This is the timeline separator]“Elise!”
The moment Elise opened the parlor door, Chase sprang to his feet.
A flower-like smile bloomed across his face.
My beautiful lady.
In one swift motion, he rushed to the door and tightly grasped Elise’s hand.
“Let go, Your Highness.”
But Elise’s demeanor was unlike her usual self. The daisy-like smile that always appeared when she saw him had vanished without a trace.
“Elise, what’s wrong?”
Chase studied her face carefully.
“Nothing. But something will happen soon enough.”
“Huh? What do you mean by that?”
Elise looked up at Chase.
His refined features, his matured and sturdy frame—all shaped by her own hands.
And now, it was time to shatter it all.
Just seeing his face made her unable to bear the thought of promising him a future.
‘I feel like I’m going to be sick. Let’s just end this.’
Elise forced the corners of her mouth upward.
“Your Highness, let’s pretend the engagement never happened.”
Cracks spread across Chase’s face. His sparkling eyes dulled, and a twitch appeared beneath his eye.
He looked pitiful at first glance—but to Elise, he only seemed hideous.
Unable to face him any longer, Elise turned away.
“Wait! Elise, did I hear you wrong?”

Chase grabbed her arm.
Without hesitation, Elise swung her hand. It struck Chase’s shoulder hard before falling away.
Both Elise and Chase were startled.
But Elise quickly composed her expression.
“That was a mistake, Your Highness. But my words about ending the engagement are sincere.”
“Elise, why are you suddenly like this? What did I do wrong?”
Suddenly… perhaps it truly was abrupt from Chase’s perspective.
But for Elise—who’d been used and discarded by him until her twenty-ninth year—it wasn’t sudden at all.
“Wrong…?”
Elise murmured as if to herself.
“Yes, Elise. If I’ve done something wrong, just tell me. I’ll apologize and fix it, okay?”
“Does a breakup always require someone to be at fault?”
Elise asked coldly.
You didn’t think so when you pushed me away.
You pinned nonexistent crimes on me—someone who’d done nothing wrong.
“Well…”
“Let’s say it’s my fault, Your Highness.”
After all, everything would inevitably be blamed on her—just as it had been in the past.
Elise didn’t want to explain further.
The nightmarish memories of her previous life were too vivid; even standing felt exhausting.
She needed rest—to gather her thoughts.
“Please never seek me out again, Your Highness.”
Elise turned her back on Chase.
Just as he’d once left her alone in the dungeon without a backward glance, she walked away without looking back even once.
[This is the timeline separator]“Hah.”
The moment Elise entered her room, she locked the door and sank to the floor.
Facing Chase had stirred her emotions so deeply that controlling her expression had been a struggle.
Though he’d discarded her so easily, Chase had gazed at her with such longing.
‘As if he truly loved me.’
But now she knew better.
His affection had been nothing more than a fleeting fever—a mirage impossible to grasp.
She still couldn’t believe she’d truly returned to life. Elise touched her body, and only when her hands felt the soft flesh and warmth did it feel real.
‘It feels like I’ve just woken from a long, dreadful nightmare.’
Yet the memories were too vivid to dismiss as a dream. Even the sensation of dying remained unforgettable. Karan’s desperate voice kept echoing in her ears.
“His Highness Karan…”
Thinking of him brought a cascade of complicated thoughts.
She had many questions for him.
Most of all, she wanted to know why he’d saved her.
Karan and Elise had little connection. They’d exchanged a few words during the hunt for the evil dragon Ragnaros, but it was hardly enough to call them personally close.
‘Didn’t Karan dislike me?’
He’d always refused her dance invitations and requests for private meals. He often even avoided her gaze.
Then why had he activated the Regression Circle?
‘No, maybe I’m mistaken. He’s not even a mage. Perhaps it was just coincidence…’
Elise let out a dry chuckle. Coincidence wouldn’t grant her such fortune in life.
It had to be Karan who activated the Regression Circle.
He must have had a special reason for hiding his identity as a mage.
Once she reached this conclusion, gratitude toward him surged stronger than her curiosity.
“I must repay this kindness.”
But what could a mere second daughter of a viscount possibly offer a prince of Titris?

Besides, there was something she needed to handle first.
‘What to do about Chase and Iris…’
Chase, who’d exploited and abandoned her, and Iris, who’d tormented her endlessly and ultimately driven her to death.
Elise stared resolutely out the window.
Now that she thought about it, she’d returned to the damned Warton Viscountcy—despite having barely managed to become Viscountess Warton in her past life.
To Elise, her parents—the Viscount and Viscountess Warton—were enemies no less than Iris.
Persecution, discrimination, abuse…
Memories of her childhood made her shudder.
‘I’m starting over from the beginning. Think. This is my chance. I’ll do what I truly want.’
She’d lived for others until now. This life, she’d live for herself.
To do that, she needed to remove those who stood in her way.
‘The first thing I must do is…’
Her eyes glinted in the window’s reflection.
“Firmly dissolve the engagement.”
According to the original timeline, Elise was supposed to receive the engagement ring today and become engaged to Chase in a month.
But since she’d already declared the breakup, that future would change.
After all, Chase wouldn’t chase after her.
“Miss, a gift has arrived.”
Yet Elise’s certainty shattered. Chase had sent her a present.

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Synopsis:
“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”
Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.
Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.
While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi.
