Chase’s forced smile cracked. He pressed his lips into a tight line.

Elise stood up, leaving Chase behind.
“Stop right there!”
Chase finally snapped out of his daze and shot to his feet.
The chair, unable to withstand the sudden force, toppled over with a clatter.
In one swift motion, he closed the distance between them and spun her around by the shoulders.
