After finishing the meeting, Heathcliff headed straight for the Empress’s Palace. He asked the servant walking beside him.

“Is Her Imperial Majesty still asleep?”

“I haven’t received any report of her coughing, but it’s possible the Empress’s Palace deliberately concealed it. Shall we proceed as we are?”

Heathcliff, as if he’d never intended to turn back in the first place, didn’t even reply to the servant—only quickening his pace. But in truth, if he could, Heathcliff wanted nothing more than to turn around right then and head for the Prince’s Palace.

‘I’m exhausted.’

This was the first time he’d led a council meeting alone, facing the ministers by himself. Greta had always been by his side before, and anyone not aligned with the Crown Prince faction dared not even open their mouths against Greta and Heathcliff.

Of course, it wasn’t that Benjamin’s people held no grievances. They simply knew their lives were precious, so they mumbled half-heartedly before closing their mouths with expressions full of resentment. But today, since Heathcliff attended the meeting alone, the ministers had much more to say.

‘Besides, they’re blaming me for causing a scene at the Windsors yesterday…’

Just watching how arrogant the pro-Crown Prince faction had become was draining enough. Yet despite this state of affairs, Heathcliff headed without complaint toward Greta’s palace for one reason alone.

‘I need to find out what’s really going on.’

It was clearly Greta who harmed Yuricien. Heathcliff himself, standing helplessly beside her, had witnessed it firsthand. Yet the world claimed it was Julian who attacked Yuricien and subsequently attempted suicide. Could such a thing truly happen—not over several nights, but in just one?

‘Mother must certainly be plotting something.’

He needed to investigate Greta’s movements since she’d driven him away so harshly yesterday. Then, the truth would be within his grasp.

‘But what if…’

Heathcliff’s brisk, unhesitating steps gradually slowed to a halt.
