As Jorgen and Yuricien hurried out, the nobles lined up on both sides along the garden path extending from the wide-open main gate all lowered their bodies in deference. A massive carriage, so large its wheels nearly scraped the edges of the broad garden path, rolled in with remarkable grace.

“It’s Her Imperial Majesty the Empress Consort’s carriage.”

“There’s the emblem of the Empress Consort’s palace.”

The nobles murmured amidst the rhythmic clatter of hooves.

The carriage proceeded straight to the main gate and halted alongside the mansion. The coachman quickly brought out a long red carpet and unfurled it with a flourish. Handmaidens alighting from a small carriage parked near the gate swiftly scattered flower petals over the carpet. At this, the nobles’ expressions darkened.

“Good heavens, how could….”

“Oh dear, it seems I shouldn’t have come here at all.”

“Who isn’t thinking that? To witness such a bloodbath….”

Making such an ostentatious entrance as a mere guest to a party hosted by someone else clearly signaled utter disregard for the host and complete indifference toward the event itself.

The carriage door opened, and a knight clad in full metal armor extended his hand. Greta, standing gracefully inside, took the knight’s hand and stepped lightly down the carriage stairs. Truly, she appeared the most exalted and noble lady in the entire empire.

“Ah, I see you’ve even brought your personal guards.”

“Even if they are the Imperial Palace Knights…”

“Oh, I just want to run away.”

The nobles grimaced while keeping their heads bowed. Only those standing far from the carriage dared speak like this; those closer couldn’t even part their lips—no, they could barely breathe.

“Good day to you all.”
