As Dolores strode resolutely toward her goal, Greta felt only emptiness. Thus, this had become a habit—tormenting Yuricien, making her suffer. The actions she had carried out mechanically over time had solidified into habit, and so, despite having no real need to do so, Greta once again cast a curse upon Yuricien.

The curse was simple.

To meet her deceased mother in dreams—to be trapped forever in a dream so blissful she would never wish to awaken. A dream from which she could not escape without immense willpower, one she would experience as often as she desired. In other words, the more Yuricien conversed with her mother in that dream, the more her longing doubled, and the more she cherished that moment, the harder it would become for her to wake up.

—Forever together. Let’s never part again.

—Mother…

Yuricien’s dream, viewed through the crystal orb, was truly beautiful. Though the world was ruled by the undead, there was still hope. The undead lived alongside humans, and though minor troubles arose, they had become part of everyday life.

Dreams were the space of Yuricien’s unconscious mind. Even after Jorgen vanished and amid persecution from Kendali and Lafine, Yuricien never lost herself—and within her unconscious always shone a light called hope. At this very moment, that hope within her unconscious shone brighter than ever.

In truth, this curse was the most intuitive and effective torment Greta had ever devised. Had Yuricien lacked the strength to hold onto hope, she would have long since suffered a mental collapse like others. And indeed, that was precisely what Greta had intended.

‘The problem is, I’m still doing this even though I no longer have any reason to torment Yuricien.’

There had been many reasons to torment Yuricien, new ones arising each time—but ultimately, they boiled down to two.

First, she envied Yuricien for receiving her father’s love. Second, she wanted to place Heathcliff on the imperial throne.

‘But what’s become of things now?’

Everium, whom she had so desperately sought recognition from, had finally fallen by Greta’s own hand. To cover up her attack on Yuricien following Everium’s death, they held a joint funeral. It was undeniably absurd—she had envied Yuricien for Everium’s affection, yet killed the Earl of Everium to escape suspicion of attempting to murder Yuricien.

Heathcliff was no different. The great Windsor was merely an obstacle to Heathcliff’s future. He had to be eliminated—for Heathcliff’s smooth path to power, for Greta’s own future as Empress Dowager, and ultimately, to become a full-fledged member of House Everium. But how had it all ended?
