“Kisa, what on earth have you learned all this time? How can you utter such a thoughtless remark?”

The count loosened his cravat with an irritable gesture.

“How could you possibly suggest such a thing, when you should have adamantly refused even if Daniel insisted first?”

Kisa managed a reply with a voice trembling as much as her hands.

“Hah, but… I don’t want to spend my whole life being ignored by my own partner.”

“So what if he ignores you a bit! If you break off the engagement, far more people will gossip about it as juicy scandal.”

Unfortunately, regardless of the truth, this kind of scandal invariably hit women harder than men.

Moreover, their engagement had lasted so long that people’s curiosity would only intensify.

“B-but that doesn’t mean I’ll never find another match.”

“So you’re saying you’ll find someone else to replace Daniel?”

“Yes. Isn’t that precisely why Father has kept me in the capital, to prepare for precisely such an unforeseen circumstance?”

“What did you say?”

“To present me to as many people as possible, in case—by any remote chance—my engagement to Lowens falls through.”

Otherwise, the count himself had no reason to keep his daughter solely in the capital while he shuttled between the capital and his estate.

Social life in the capital was never cheap. Every dress Kisa wore, every piece of jewelry she adorned, and every gathering where she had to take center stage—all were paid for in gold.

Count Bansfeldt was not the sort to spend lavishly merely for his daughter’s pleasure. So why keep her here?

The answer was painfully obvious. The fundamental reason young nobles of Kisa’s age engaged so fervently in social events was simple: to secure an advantageous marriage.

Though his daughter already had Daniel as her fiancé, the count was not one to put all his eggs in a single basket.

After all, Daniel might die unexpectedly abroad, the Lowens family fortunes might decline… or perhaps an even more favorable suitor with a more romantic disposition might become enchanted by Kisa’s beauty.

Even if none of that came to pass, the more she was praised in society as an ideal bride, the higher her value would rise.

This would only make Daniel and House Lowens desire her more ardently. Sadly, such calculations held no sway over Daniel—but at least this was likely how the count saw things.

“You certainly have a way with words.”

Perhaps it was because his motives had been laid bare, or maybe because he’d assumed his daughter knew nothing at all. The count averted his eyes, looking awkward.

“In any case, I’ll pretend I didn’t hear what you just said. You may go now.”

“Father, I’ll find another suitor soon enough. You know I’m quite pretty, after all.”

It was distasteful to have to lean on her appearance, but for now, it was her best option.

Though it felt awkward saying so herself, it was an undeniable fact that Kisa Bansfeldt was beautiful.

Everyone said so, and the count himself had drilled into her ears not to grow prideful just because she was well-favored. The burdensome nickname “the finest flower of high society” wasn’t earned merely for being a model noblewoman.

“A perfectly suitable match will surely come along.”

Her looks and background were simply too exceptional for her to be shunned over just one or two broken engagements. She could confidently say that the moment news of a broken engagement spread, marriage proposals would pour in from every direction.

“But you won’t find anyone better than Daniel Lowens.”

“Father…”

“Am I wrong? If you truly believe a better man than Daniel would propose to you, go ahead—name him.”

“……”

She couldn’t. Because no one came to mind.

Within the kingdom, families that could rival or surpass House Lowens, headed by Marquis Lowens, could be counted on two hands.

Among them, the pool narrowed further when considering only those with an unmarried male head or heir—and even they already had their own betrothals arranged.

Indeed, it would have been more surprising for someone of such lineage, with both prestige and wealth, to reach marriageable age without an engagement.

Kisa bit her lip firmly. Her thinking had been shallow. From the start, any “suitable match” she might bring home could never satisfy her father.

Count Bansfeldt pulled a fresh sheet of paper from his drawer and began writing with his fountain pen—a clear nonverbal cue that she should leave if she had nothing more to say.

“How long will you stand there? I’d like to focus on drafting a congratulatory letter to the new Duke Hiran.”

“……Father, are you truly determined not to allow me to break off this engagement, no matter what?”

“Kisa Bansfeldt.”

Her father spoke without even glancing at her.

“This marriage is your duty. If you’ve enjoyed a life of privilege as my daughter, then you must marry the man who offers the greatest benefit to our house.”

“But Daniel—”

“I don’t want to hear it. You’re no longer a naive child, are you? Do all nobles marry the one they desire? Most marry someone they don’t particularly like, resign themselves to it, and make it work.”

That was the end of the conversation. With a final warning not to disappoint him further, the count completely ignored her presence. Kisa had no choice but to leave his study.

Her father wasn’t entirely wrong. To some degree, Kisa had accepted the marriage obligations that came with her noble status.

Moreover, even before learning the truth, she’d never truly imagined a rosy future with Daniel.

“Daniel, Daniel! Let’s play together!”

“No. You’re boring. I’m going to play war games with my friends, so you go play with your dolls.”

From childhood, he had nearly always found his fiancée a nuisance. She’d loved him only because the rare moments when he’d shown her kindness—likely out of caprice—had shone so brilliantly in her memory. But even she wasn’t blind to the signs.

Still, she’d thought it was fine. Daniel showed little interest in other women, and among those outside his family, Kisa was the one he treated with the most familiarity.

Or so she’d believed—until she learned of that teahouse owner.

Daniel’s face flashed in her mind like a nightmare—openly belittling her in front of that woman, calling her foolish. She understood her father’s words; she understood them perfectly. Yet she could not bear the thought of spending her married life with him.

Even if Daniel reformed his behavior after his father’s reprimand, Kisa knew she would endlessly doubt herself if they married. Would the words I just spoke sound foolish? Did my actions just now seem stupid?

Outwardly composed, but secretly—wasn’t he mocking her? Would he go to that woman, recounting every silly thing his wife did, using their “dear friendship” as an excuse to turn her into a joke over tea?

If only she’d never known Daniel’s true feelings or his relationship with that woman. Now that she did, there was no going back.

Yes—if it had to be a stranger with no feelings at all, perhaps she could have endured it. But not Daniel. Marrying him would suffocate her until she withered and died.

When she came to her senses, she was already running down the corridor. Such unrefined behavior was something she hadn’t experienced since early childhood.

But Kisa simply couldn’t stop her own legs.

“Oh! Miss!”

A startled maid she nearly collided with at the corner gaped at her.

“Did you see Daniel?”

“Huh?”

“Daniel Lowens. Have you seen him or not?”

“Oh—your fiancé? I saw him heading toward the rear garden.”

“Thank you.”

“Ah, miss! Running like that is dangerous!”

The man in question was lounging against a gazebo in the rear garden, watching the scenery.

“Well, well. We meet again, milady.”

His greeting carried the acrid scent of recent cigar smoke.

“What brings you here this time?”

“Go to my father right now and tell him you’re breaking off our engagement.”

“What?”

His eyes widened at her blunt demand, then slowly narrowed into a sly smile.

“Ah. So the count wouldn’t listen to you, and now you come bothering me instead. Is your father too fearsome, and I just seem easy?”

“Think whatever you like. So what’s your answer?”

“I’ll decline. I intend to marry you.”

“You… why are you doing this? If you love Hazel so much, why insist on marrying me?”

The moment that name left her lips, the smile vanished from Daniel’s face. Finding his expression absurd, Kisa deliberately mocked him.

“Oh—so love and continuing the family line are separate matters? Then why me specifically? With your standing, there must be plenty of women willing to accept a loveless marriage to someone like you.”

Perhaps, had Kisa not discovered just how deeply Daniel despised her, she might have resigned herself to marrying him. After all, noble marriages were usually like that.

“Let me correct just one thing. What exists between Hazel and me isn’t affection—it’s friendship. I’ve told you this several times now. Why can’t you remember?”

Lowering his voice, he stepped slowly toward Kisa.

“This time, I sincerely hope it sinks into that thick skull of yours.”

She stepped back—one pace. He advanced—two more.

“And listen: no matter what you say, I won’t break our engagement, so save your breath.”

“……Why are you doing this to me?”

Kisa found herself trapped—behind her, the gazebo railing; in front of her, Daniel. She couldn’t move an inch.

His large frame completely boxed her in.

“You called me foolish, didn’t you? If I’m so foolish, why insist on marrying me? Wouldn’t a smarter wife make things easier for you too?”

“Why? Because, Kisa—it’s not your intellect I need.”

The corner of his mouth curled up as he raised his index finger and tapped her lower abdomen.

“It’s this.”

His cold voice whispered politely into her ear.

“Marry me quietly and bear my child.”

My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband

This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.

The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.

They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.

In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.

When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.

She makes his life a living hell.

And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.

Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!

Intro

Dong Xia lost her memory.

Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”

Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.

…

The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.

She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.

Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.

No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!

Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂

*

Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.

The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.

In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.

The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.

And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.

Notes:

1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.

2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
