“Oh, no. Nothing happened.”

When Kisa reflexively shook her head, Seyard immediately accepted it.

“I see. I must have been mistaken, then. You just seemed unsettled.”

“Not at all. I’m actually in a good mood now that the engagement’s finally off. It feels so refreshing and satisfying…”

“Kisa?”

She couldn’t do it. She didn’t want to lie to someone who genuinely worried about her. So Kisa weakly opened her mouth.

“Truthfully, I haven’t been feeling great. It’s not that anything particular happened! I just broke off the engagement exactly as you know, yet I feel strangely down.”

Her nervous fingers fidgeted only with the teacup handle.

“Why is this happening? I don’t even understand my own feelings. Could it be… could it possibly be…?”

Could she still have lingering feelings for Daniel? She couldn’t bring herself to voice the question aloud—it wouldn’t be fair to him after how willingly he’d cooperated with the annulment.

Yet this clever man surely understood the words Kisa had swallowed. She stared fixedly at the tabletop, avoiding his gaze.

Before him, she felt like a criminal, and the pink blush staining her cheeks was her brand. Even if Seyard scolded her now for such weakness, she’d have no defense.

“Look up, Kisa.”

But the voice that reached her ears was as gentle as ever, carrying none of the expected reproach. When she lifted her head, his face held no trace of accusation.

“If you don’t mind, could you tell me specifically what’s happened to you lately and when this melancholy began? I’m afraid I can’t fully grasp your feelings from just those few words.”
