“Thanks to that, the regular gatherings held there had to be canceled. Do you even know how heartbroken Hazel is because of it? Knowing how much she cherishes those meetings, how could anyone do something like that?”

Daniel continued in a contemptuous tone.

“Not only that—the article even subtly dug up Hazel’s past, mentioning that painful fact about her having lost a husband once before! Damn it!”

Thud! Unable to contain his fury, he slammed his fist against the wall beside him.

Kisa flinched at the violent outburst. Instinctive fear began to surge within her once more.

“They said the reporter who wrote the article had already left by the time I stormed into that damned magazine office. They moved awfully fast, didn’t they? They threw out a scapegoat, tossed them some bait, and erased all traces immediately.”

Whether it was fortunate or infuriating, Daniel—blinded by rage—had yet to notice Kisa’s distress.

“Here he is—the fiancé of the most beautiful woman in high society—yet blinded by some common widow! Of course the masses swarmed like dogs to such gossip! How hilarious, how entertaining, right?”

Daniel’s voice grew louder, and with it, Kisa’s fear swelled inside her.

“Fine, let’s say I accept that about myself. The more they make me look like the world’s biggest fool, the more justified Count Bansfeldt becomes in unilaterally calling off the engagement.”

“…….”

“But what does Hazel have to do with any of this? How could anyone possibly target someone so delicate and pitiful!”

She was overwhelmed by the urge to flee right then and there. She wanted to rush back to her room and lock herself in. She longed for a safe place—a place Daniel couldn’t follow.

“Hey, Kisa?”

Daniel, noticing her bowed head and continued silence, spoke with a hint of confusion.
