Patria woke up to the sounds of her colleagues preparing breakfast. Although she was Roxiana’s handmaiden, she still lived in the servants’ quarters alongside the maids.

Handmaidens from good families still looked down on Patria, who came from a commoner background, and Patria herself had no desire to force herself into sharing a room with them. Becoming Roxiana’s handmaiden had been the greatest stroke of luck in Patria’s life, and she had never wished for anything beyond that. She always remained keenly aware of her station.

“Sorry, did we wake you?”

A maid noticed Patria blinking her eyes open and asked.

“No, it’s fine. I should get up now anyway.”

“Since Her Highness has been waking up late lately, you don’t have to rush so early, right?”

“Well… that’s true, but still.”

“We feel bad for waking you like this. But just hang in there a little longer. Once the princess becomes the Grand Duchess and moves to the main palace, you’ll get to stay there too.”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“I’m really envious. The handmaidens’ quarters in the main palace are truly nice—you each get your own room.”

The maids envied Patria for her upcoming life in the main palace, but Patria herself didn’t find that prospect particularly appealing. She already knew full well how harshly the other handmaidens—who sneered whenever their eyes met—would treat her once they had to live together.

Even after the maids hurried out for their morning duties, Patria remained lying in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. After a long while, she finally got up, washed, carefully combed her hair, and changed into a clean dress.

‘Once Her Highness becomes the Grand Duchess, I’ll need to dress appropriately too.’

Handmaidens in the main palace always wore dresses—simple yet elegant, never shabby regardless of who might visit.

Though Patria did have a few dresses provided by Head Maid Elledrun, she would certainly need more to properly assist Roxiana going forward.
