At the head of the long, wide table sat Floyd, with Kirshan and the knight-captains seated on either side, chatting boisterously. An array of dishes covered the table, and servants constantly cleared away empty wine bottles and brought fresh ones.

Hexton, upon hearing the story of how they had demanded reparations from the Kingdom of Anilta, burst into loud laughter.

“Arse’s face must have been quite a sight when he said those words to King Jorge III.”

“It was the look of someone seeing a demon. But with his master’s flames flickering ominously, what could he possibly say? Anilta’s knights stood frozen in terror right in front of those flames.”

Adrian picked up where Cain left off.

“Even that wasn’t enough, in my opinion. We made far too many concessions. Thirty-one men were injured, twelve of them seriously. Some won’t recover for over half a year. If only Jorge had honestly disclosed the extent of the damage from the start, we wouldn’t have suffered so many casualties. Ah, I really should’ve just killed him.”

Adrian clicked his tongue regretfully. Hexton spoke.

“Still, it was fortunate that the Black Bears accompanied us. Hurrying back because of the princess turned out to be a blessing in disguise.”

After learning that the Franche royal family’s bodies had been dumped into a well, an enraged Floyd had brought along even the Black Bear Knights to finish things quickly and return. Thanks to that, the expedition ended without a single death. Without those additional troops, it would have been a considerably perilous mission.

Adrian nodded.

“Now that you mention it, you’re right. That’s one more reason I should treat the princess well. Good. As a knight’s oath dictates…”

“Your oath is completely unnecessary, I keep telling you.”

As Adrian and Cain bickered as usual, a servant announced Roxiana’s arrival. When the dining room door opened, everyone—except Floyd—stood up naturally, even Arsen.

Roxiana, dressed in a deep blue gown, appeared calm and dignified. Made entirely of silk with no lace, the dress swayed gently with her movements, its low neckline clearly revealing the slave brand etched onto her collarbone.

Yet no one could possibly think of her as a “slave.” An elegance so commanding overwhelmed even the knight-captains, leaving them unable to entertain such a notion.
