Patricia, straightening the dress, glanced uneasily at Roxiana.

“The princess is acting strangely.”

After going out with Floyd and returning, Roxiana looked as if her soul had left her body. Normally, when offered help to take off her dress, she would have said, “It’s alright. I can do it myself.” But today, she stood dazed like a doll, surrendering her body to Patricia without a word.

“What could have happened?”

Though one might assume the reason a woman returns soulless after being alone with a man is obvious, Roxiana’s expression suggested it wasn’t that kind of issue at all.

Roxiana sat blankly, her gaze fixed on empty space, occasionally biting her lower lip tightly as if trying to swallow rising anger.

“Could something unpleasant have happened with His Grace? But surely His Grace would never act improperly toward the princess…”

Unaware of Patricia’s worry, Roxiana remained lost in thought.

“Lucas Felur.”

She wanted to ask him.

“What were you thinking as you beheaded my family—who trusted you? Was it entertaining? Or did you feel even a little remorse?”

Just imagining how her family—now slain by the very person she’d accepted as kin—must have felt and what expressions they wore as they died made her heart sink into an abyss.

Roxiana gripped her skirt tightly to keep from screaming. She bit her lip to suppress a sob that nearly burst out.

“And Elise Heilis, you…”

Only then did the final conversation with her oldest and dearest friend come rushing back.
