Thanking him yet still thinking it was a cruel dream, Roxiana reached out her hand toward Lanien. She liked the feeling of his deep brown hair winding around her fingers.

Roxiana stroked her younger sibling’s head and watched as his skin turned black. She clearly saw his brown hair fall out in clumps and his smooth skin rot and drip away.

“I know, Lanien.”

Roxiana spoke to her sibling as he crumbled before her.

“You’ll no longer be in this world. I won’t cling to foolish hopes anymore. I won’t think that the gods will ever do anything good for me. But still, please visit me like this sometimes. Because I miss you so much.”

With a single blink, the scenery changed. Roxiana lay still, staring up at the fresco painted on the ceiling. The heavy weight in her abdomen no longer felt unfamiliar.

Slowly turning her head, she saw Floyd’s sleeping face. As she silently gazed at his tousled reddish-brown hair and thick eyebrows, the ache clinging to her chest gradually faded.

Without you, could I have endured? Could I have escaped, even briefly, from these blissful yet cruel dreams?

Probably not. Breathing itself would have been agony. Every moment would have been painful and miserable, making me long for death once again. For the sake of my sibling, who might now wander as an undead, I’d probably beg them not to place me in Adelia’s coffin.

Though pain and loneliness remained, it was Floyd who kept her will to live from vanishing. The sound of his breath, the weight against her, and the warmth she felt each time she opened her eyes gasping in pain firmly anchored Roxiana to this life.

Thinking this, she carefully slipped out of his arms and got out of bed. Floyd, seemingly awakened at some point, opened his eyes slightly and asked in a sleep-thickened voice,

“Can’t sleep?”

“My throat’s dry.”

“Shall I come with you?”
