Lucas growled out his words, and Elise let the corners of her eyebrows droop.

“I see. I’m glad Your Highness enjoyed it.”

Speaking with her usual coquettish tone, Elise sat beside Lucas and rubbed his thigh. Lucas’s mood lightened slightly, but Elise’s did not.

She was already emotionally unstable from her pregnancy. Even sitting still exhausted her, yet because of the queen, she’d been forced into charity work she’d never done before—laundry, cleaning, even bathing the sick… Her once-smooth hands were now blistered from labor.

During all this, she’d heard that Roxiana had spent thousands of gold on an engagement, and to avoid being outdone, Elise had strained herself searching for investments and gathering funds.

While she endured loneliness and heartache, Lucas hadn’t stayed by her side. He’d gone off to enjoy hunting alone, and now expected her to cater to his mood.
