There was a persistent desire in my heart to keep running toward the easier path—to believe Persy’s words, to insist I hadn’t done anything wrong, that I deserved to be happy, that my family would have wanted that for me. It was a pitiful, shameful yearning.

While my fiancé and my friend sharpened their knives to murder my family, I had been praying for my wedding, completely unaware of their deaths and only dreaming of how my life would change after marriage.

The children, sensing something odd, had come closer, but upon seeing Roxiana crying, began to sob as well. Even though Persy flustered and tried to explain, “No, it’s not like that,” Jewelry suddenly burst into loud wails. Dennis, though trying to act like the older brother, still had tears welling up in his eyes.

Seeing Jewelry sobbing uncontrollably and Persy flustered, Roxiana couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh.

After Persy and the children left, Roxiana slipped out of the Lily Palace. She wanted to calm her restless heart. She wanted to firmly hold onto her resolve not to drift toward the easier path.

—“I never even thought I’d done anything worthy of forgiveness in the first place.”

She wanted to pull those words out from deep within her chest.

Yet, Persy’s eyes and smile when she’d spoken them had been so painfully like her mother’s—so much so that, even though their voices differed, it sounded exactly like her mother’s. Because of that, it was impossible to extract those deeply embedded words.

‘I miss you. I miss you, Mom.’

She called out to her mother as she used to when she was little.
