“You knew my biological father, Count Paul Heredian, well?”

At her question, Magus silently turned over the frame he had placed face-down and showed it to Lorencia.

The moment she saw the portrait inside the frame, she felt a sharp shock, as if a spear had pierced straight through her body. And she thought she understood what Teishar meant by that painful truth.

Lorencia slowly raised the corner of her lips. Lorencia picked up the frame. And she gently brushed her fingers over it. The man depicted in the portrait looked strikingly like her.

“My father was very…”

Lorencia realized that when Magus said he knew her father well, he wasn’t referring to Brandt—it was the man in the portrait.

“Handsome.”

Lorencia smiled as she continued stroking the frame, tightly pressing her trembling lips shut.

“Truly handsome.”

“The man in that portrait is Sir Cain of House de Gloucester—the younger brother of the current head.”

Lorencia finally understood what her mother had meant in her dream when she said Lorencia resembled Cain.

“Where is my father? Is he still alive?”

Instead of answering, Magus remained silent. At that, tears began streaming endlessly down Lorencia’s cheeks. Wiping away her tears with her hand, she looked once more at Cain’s portrait—but soon a tear dropped heavily onto the frame.

She had lived believing Brandt was her real father. She had even thought perhaps Mushila had been wronged by Brandt, her real father, and thus bore her under tragic circumstances, leading her to view her own birth negatively.

Because of Mushila’s love, she had endured even the harshest abuse from her supposed father Brandt. She had tolerated Madam Anne’s and Ilina’s torment. She had silently borne the scorn of everyone in House Paul Heredian.
