When eating meat dishes, she had to hold the meat steady with her fork and cut it with her knife, ensuring each cut was made at a right angle.

“When cutting meat, you should draw the front part of the blade toward yourself. The plate must not move while you’re cutting.”

Lorencia had memorized all the dining etiquette rules theoretically, but she realized practice was another matter entirely.

She had assumed dessert would be simple enough to eat, but she learned that its presentation must remain intact, and that using a fork versus a spoon for fruit made a difference.

Amelin and Evan began praising Lorencia. Blushing shyly, Lorencia nodded. Although she studied for her own sake, their encouragement and praise made her heart feel soft and warm. She felt shy, yet a gentle warmth bloomed inside her chest.

But that warmth lasted only a moment. Teishar arrived. His words instantly turned her soft feelings hard as stone—and Evan and Amelin felt the same.
