Luans and Lorilors had ended up in a duel over a woman. The story of their duel began spreading like wildfire. To anyone who heard it, the tale of two men fighting over one woman sounded romantic—except for one problem: one of those men was Lorilors.

Everyone in high society knew that Lorilors fancied every woman who wore a skirt; not a single person was unaware of this. And the man dueling this pervert was none other than Luans von Ishter, the Second Imperial Prince of the Isther Empire.

People were horrified. The worst rumor began circulating—that Luans shared Lorilors’ depraved tastes. Everyone started whispering in unison that they never imagined Luans could harbor such perverse sexual inclinations like Lorilors.

The rumors grew beyond control. Naturally, people grew curious about which woman these two perverts were fighting over—and attention quickly turned toward the bastard daughter of House of Count Paul Heredian.

[This is the timeline separator]

Anne received a letter. The moment she read it, overwhelmed by unbearable embarrassment, she rushed straight into Lorencia’s room. She had already been severely scolded by Brandt over Luans challenging a duel to protect Lorencia’s honor.

Bang! She threw the door open violently. Lorencia was gently stroking a black cat resting in her lap.

“Leo. Go wait downstairs for a bit.”

—Meeow!

Seeing Anne, Leo—who had been hissing moments before—straightened his tail and gracefully leaped down from Lorencia’s lap. Watching this, Anne silently swore she would strangle that black cat to death and glared fiercely at Lorencia.

“You knew this would happen, didn’t you?”

“What do you mean?”

“You didn’t really fall for Viscount Lorilors—you only became his lover to manipulate him!”

“I already told you, Madam Anne. One should never cause an irreparable scandal.”

“You monster.”

No matter what Anne said, Lorencia simply began humming cheerfully.

“Even you couldn’t have imagined this, Madam Anne—and neither could I. I truly never expected His Highness Prince Luans to care for me so deeply… to the point of intense jealousy.”

Lorencia gave Anne a faint, amused smile. Anne couldn’t take it anymore—she grabbed Lorencia’s collar even more tightly.

“You’re not just some monstrous woman—you really are a genuine monster. A truly terrifying one.”

Anne never wanted things to turn out like this. She had only wished for Lorilors to inflict irreparable damage on Lorencia. Instead, not only was Lorencia unharmed, she had become the center of attention in high society as the celebrated bastard daughter.

“Do you even realize how much trouble you’ve caused our Ilina?”

Ilina, regarded as the belle of high society, was now exhausted from constant questions at every tea party and gathering: “Just how young and beautiful must she be for both His Highness Prince Luans and Viscount Lorilors to chase after her so desperately?”

Anne had never wanted this. She’d only hoped Lorencia would suffer—not that Ilina would end up struggling.

“Do you have any idea how utterly ridiculous I look because of you?”

“Why were you even born? You should’ve died alongside your mother! Why are you still alive?”

“The reason I was born is because my father’s love reached my mother’s womb—and through that love, I was conceived within her…”

Anne screamed in agony. Still gripping Lorencia’s collar, she raised her right hand and slapped Lorencia’s cheek mercilessly, again and again.

“Don’t dress it up as ‘love.’ You’re nothing but proof of filthy adultery—a tainted, impure existence within House Paul Heredian.”

Lorencia knew this well. Her late mother had never once spoken of Brandt.

Thus, she’d already sensed she wasn’t born from ordinary love.

Her mother’s absolute love had made her existence possible—a ‘miracle’ born of love, entirely unrelated to Brandt. Even if labeled a ‘bastard’ or ‘monster’ by others, she didn’t care.

As long as she was a miracle and love to just one person—that was enough.

She couldn’t have endured reality otherwise.

“But what shall we do now? The schemes you planned against this ‘impurity’ clearly haven’t been contained at all, have they?”

“Fix what you’ve done yourself.”

“Must I really be the one to clean up this mess?”

“Do it before I kill that little kitten!”

Anne’s voice rose sharply.

“I’ll clean it up—but only if you meet my condition.”

“Isn’t sparing the kitten enough? Why more conditions?”

“Honestly, go ahead and kill the kitten if you wish. But afterward, you’ll have to deal with the consequences yourself.”

The smile vanished from Lorencia’s lips. Anne loosened her grip on Lorencia’s collar.

“Speak. I’ll accept your condition.”

“It’s hardly worth calling a ‘condition,’ really.”

“If it’s so trivial, why complicate things? Just say it plainly.”

“All you need to do is admit the truth. That alone will free His Highness Prince Luans from these rumors.”

“The truth?”

Anne felt as if her breath had been knocked out of her.

“Just let people know the plain truth: that you starved and beat your abused bastard daughter; that His Highness Prince Luans, Ilina’s former lover, took pity on her and persuaded Count Paul Heredian to officially recognize her as a noble daughter; yet you kept tormenting her and even schemed with Viscount Lorilors to force yourself on me—until His Highness Prince Luans, who happened to visit the mansion, discovered this, rescued me, and challenged a duel to protect my honor. Isn’t that the perfect truth?”

Anne absolutely refused to let the public learn these facts.

“Why hesitate? If you tell a slightly embellished version of the truth, His Highness Prince Luans will be seen as a kind-hearted, compassionate prince who helped a poor bastard girl—and public favor toward him will surely rise.”

“Speak sense.”

“If, before the duel at the imperial palace training grounds, I publicly share this adjusted truth, you and Viscount Lorilors will be socially ruined—but at least His Highness Prince Luans’ reputation will be fully restored.”

“So that’s your condition?”

“My condition isn’t just about telling the truth…”

Lorencia smiled brightly.

“It’s for you, Madam Anne, to become the most infamous villainess in the entire Isther Empire—the kind whose name will be remembered in infamy throughout history. That’s my condition.”

—Mew mew mew!

Startled by Leo’s cry, Anne lowered her head slightly and trembled. Leo had already crept back under Lorencia’s legs, rubbing his head against her and meowing pitifully for affection. Lorencia opened her arms wide, lifted Leo up, and slowly stroked his head with the back of her hand.

“The more villainous you become, the higher His Highness Prince Luans’ reputation will soar among the people.”

Lorencia recalled how Anne and Ilina had once trampled her underfoot to elevate their own reputations. They’d used her as bait just to torment her. When they had no one else to bully, they crushed her. They’d twisted every situation to paint her as the villain, all just to appear virtuous themselves.

“Lorencia, you really are a monster. We should’ve killed a creature like you long ago.”

Lorencia tightly clutched the fabric over her left chest. Annoyed, she spoke calmly toward Anne, who so casually called her a monster.

“Weren’t you the ones who wanted me to be a monster more than anyone else?”

“We never wanted you to become a monster—you were born a one-of-a-kind monster in this world: impure, repulsive, and filthy.”

Anne gave a slight smirk, lifting one corner of her mouth—but her eyes glinted with ominous intent.

Just then, the door opened, and Luans walked in.

“Lorencia. Come here.”

When Luans extended his hand with a beckoning gesture, Lorencia set Leo down on the floor and stood beside Luans.

“Good. That’s right. When I call you to come, you come; when I tell you to go, you go. Understood?”

“Yes, Your Highness Prince Luans.”

Blushing slightly despite the dark bruise on her cheek, Lorencia offered a shy smile. Luans looked down at her with evident satisfaction.

“Have you told her, Lorencia?”

“Yes. But she seems unwilling to accept my condition. In my dream, it was clear that only by doing this would Your Highness’s reputation improve—but apparently, Madam Anne refuses.”

Luans shot Anne an irritated glare.

“Madam Anne, you’d be wise to accept Lorencia’s condition.”

It felt as if icy water had been poured over her head. Anne clenched the hem of her dress violently and stared at Luans with a distorted smile.

“Your Highness Prince Luans, but—”

“My maternal grandfather mentioned that, should you refuse Lorencia’s terms, he might send Ilina as the thirteenth concubine to the King of the Western Desert.”

Anne bit her lower lip hard enough to draw blood. Duke Graycan, Luans’ maternal grandfather, was precisely the sort of man who would carry out such a threat without hesitation. He resented that his daughter had never become Empress officially—and that his grandson Luans had not been named Crown Prince.

Both Anne’s own family and House of Count Paul Heredian relied heavily on Duke Graycan’s support. Their hands were tied; they held too many vulnerabilities. There was simply no way to refuse—he’d held power over them from the very beginning.

“Don’t worry about your family or Ilina, Madam Anne.”

“Do I even have a choice?”

“I’ll arrange for you to enter a comfortable convent.”

Though called a convent, it was effectively a prison.

“I’ve heard quite a few women end their own lives due to the convent’s harsh conditions. I hope you endure convent life well, Madam Anne.”

Anne’s mind went blank. Unless one were utterly naive, anyone would understand exactly what Luans meant.

“No, Your Highness Prince Luans.”

“What is it?”

She couldn’t bring herself to ask outright whether he was hinting she should take her own life at the convent. If that truly was his intention—she resolved she would never die. She would survive, no matter what.

“Please take good care of Ilina.”

“You needn’t worry about that, Madam Anne. I’m not pleased with how things turned out either. Had you not crossed the line, none of this would’ve happened—it’s rather unfortunate. Anyway, I wish you good luck.”

Luans spoke as though he were being remarkably generous. Anne felt hollow. Without herself or Julie around, who would look after Ilina properly? She was already worried.

“Let me give you one piece of advice, Your Highness Prince Luans.”

Anne pointed directly at Lorencia.

“Once that monster has served her purpose, you must kill her without fail.”

Otherwise, the monster would devour them all—even Ilina.
