Teishar infiltrated the empire in secret, riding through the Isther border forest with the Spencer Marquisate’s ravens. The ravens of House Spencer are named for their attachment to shadows.

The sky was growing steadily darker. That meant, in other words, that Brandt’s death was drawing near.

Teishar wanted nothing more than to steal the seal of House Paul Heredian quickly and return to Lorencia. The reward he’d already received from her flashed through his mind again, causing heat to rise once more to his face. Since he’d already been paid in advance, the thought of claiming an extra bonus upon his return made him imagine Lorencia wriggling again atop the bed. His heart felt as though it were being violently pummeled.

Just thinking of Lorencia now made the corners of his mouth lift involuntarily into a soft, spreading smile.

“My lord. We’re approaching the southern gate of Count Paul Heredian’s estate.”

Teishar immediately steeled his relaxed expression back into its usual impassivity and nodded at the raven who had reported.

According to Lorencia, Count Paul Heredian’s estate lay to the north, featuring one large, ornate gate on the west side reserved exclusively for nobles or members of the imperial family, and one small gate for servants and commoners.

“There’s no intrusion-detection magic active.”

One of the ravens, having checked the southern gate and its surrounding wall, approached Teishar and whispered in a low voice. It was exactly as Lorencia had said.

Just as Lorencia described, no magical alarm was set on the southern gate or its adjacent wall to alert anyone of unauthorized entry.

Teishar gestured to his ravens, and they easily scaled the wall surrounding Count Paul Heredian’s estate. Landing silently, they scanned the pitch-black surroundings and sensed the presence of knights patrolling nearby.

Avoiding the watchful eyes of the estate guards, they moved eastward along the wall. The tower, faintly illuminated by moonlight, came into view.

“Everyone wait here.”

In the blink of an eye, Brandt appeared at the base of the tower, cautiously surveying his surroundings while holding a small lantern. His face, lit by the lantern’s glow, looked terribly gaunt, and his eyes were swollen from what must have been excessive weeping.
