I know very well that our Charlotte is severely lacking. I also understand how difficult it must be to serve as an advisor beside such an inadequate princess. As a mother, I beg you—Marquis Spencer.

“His Highness Adrian’s neck is thick? Isn’t that a rather harsh way to put it?”

“Your Highness, may I explain once again how I saved Crown Prince Adrian during the demon-beast hunt? Had I arrived even a moment later, he would have died without ever meeting you.”

“I understand. I’d appreciate it if you stopped talking about it now. Just how long do you plan to keep milking that story?”

“I wonder the same myself—just how long you intend to keep milking that story.”

“That does make me curious too.”

“You’ll see for yourself in time. Also, Your Highness, the carriage may shake quite a bit.”

“Understood. I entrust the journey to the Isther Empire to you, Marquis Spencer.”

“Understood.”

Teishar smiled, then quickly scanned the knights armed behind the carriage. All wore grim expressions.

“Everyone, we depart for the Isther Empire.”

Teishar swallowed a sigh within. Under normal circumstances, he should have already returned to his marquisate by now.

But starting a few days ago, demon appearances had suddenly surged at an alarming rate—

Just like twenty years ago, when demon sightings first began multiplying. From April of that year, demon appearances had sharply increased, and as monsters descended upon villages, the toll on lives and property grew ever more severe.

The Polloid Empire and the Isther Empire, neighbors separated only by a high mountain range, had mobilized their armies en masse to counter these suddenly emerging demons.

Due to the appearance of dangerous demons, the two empires had signed an agreement to jointly exterminate them.

They established border villages and trade routes along each empire’s periphery to contain the demons—but the demons did not diminish. Instead, their numbers grew.

Investigation teams were dispatched to determine the demons’ origin, yet even now, the cause remained unknown.

Teishar had one lingering thought—his father’s words.

Though unimaginable today, according to his father Magus, twenty years ago demon appearances had been nearly nonexistent. Back then, it was simply taken for granted that demons did not exist.

A sharp glint flickered behind Teishar’s stern eyes. Who exactly was this Goddess Ella, whom his father pursued so obsessively?

He didn’t know who this “child of Goddess Ella” was, yet his father kept searching.

He’d always assumed it was grief over his mother’s sudden passing that drove his father to this.

The Spencer family crest bore a serpent. Teishar had assumed his father’s reference to “red eyes” simply meant that every Spencer-born male was born with red eyes—that was all.

Their family symbol was a ‘serpent,’ yes—but how that connected to the child of Goddess Ella remained utterly inexplicable. He’d told his father he couldn’t understand, but his father only repeated that he’d know the moment he met the child in person.

Suddenly recalling his father’s words now, Teishar felt strangely unsettled. His heart pounded oddly, excitement surged through him, and for some reason, he couldn’t calm down.

Now that he thought about it, when he inherited the marquis title, his father had entrusted him with a jewel box, saying it held something that must be returned to the child of Goddess Ella. Inside were only fragments of broken violet amethyst.

“Marquis Spencer, why do you look so grave?”

Startled from his reverie, Teishar turned toward the voice addressing him—and immediately frowned openly upon recognizing the knight.

It was Captain Carlos of the imperial knights. The third son of House Roild, one of Polloid Empire’s three great ducal families, Carlos was a ruggedly handsome man with golden hair and tanned skin. Cheerful and easygoing, he always drew crowds—and was especially popular among women.

Those who were popular usually talked a lot—and Carlos was no exception. He never stopped chattering, whether it was something unpleasant or pleasant to hear.

“I have a feeling you’ll meet someone special once we reach the Isther Empire. Don’t you agree, Marquis Spencer?”

Teishar gave no verbal reply to Carlos’s words, but his expression clearly showed he had no desire to answer. Seeing this, Carlos’s smile only deepened.

“My lord Marquis, if you show your displeasure so plainly on your face, you’ll hurt my feelings.”

“Demons could jump out at any moment on this road, Captain Carlos.”

As if signaling he had no desire to listen further, Teishar yanked his horse’s reins and spurred forward.

Lorencia woke from sleep.

“Why is my dream like this?”

“Why did Marquis Spencer appear in my dream?”

His neatly combed black hair and masculine features carried a faintly boyish air. His pomegranate-red eyes were incredibly soft and warm, and his sharply defined eyebrows were perfectly groomed. In her dream, Lorencia tilted her head back and looked up at Teishar, the Marquis Spencer.

Wasn’t the reason flowers needed the sun the same as why people needed to eat!

What Teishar was doing in Count Paul Heredian’s mansion in her dream was utterly incomprehensible. No matter how hard Lorencia thought, she couldn’t find an answer.

She clutched the amethyst necklace in her hand—then shook her head and let go. Could it be because she kept thinking of Teishar and using the amethyst’s power to see him? Maybe. That might be it.

“That’s absurd. There’s no way he’d come to the count’s mansion. It’s just a dream.”

Convinced it was nothing more than a meaningless dream, Lorencia lay her head back on the pillow and closed her eyes to sleep again.

“I’m going mad.”

Lorencia jolted awake again, startled.

“Why is Marquis Spencer rubbing his head against me like Leo—and why am I stroking his hair again!”

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

—Miyaaong.

Leo, now awake, began crying out at Lorencia as if complaining about the noise.

“Leo, I’m sorry. I had such an absurd dream.”

—Nyaong!

In the dream, as she ran her fingers through Teishar’s hair, his tearfully grateful red eyes instantly transformed into those of a man.

Her chin tilted back, her hair disheveled as she lay down. She woke from the dream vividly feeling Teishar’s flushed red eyes gazing down at her, pulsing like a heartbeat.

Lorencia was dumbfounded. The Teishar she’d met was a calm, reserved man.

Yet in the dream, he’d yearned for her. His strange aura—mingling shame and pleasure—was utterly bizarre.

If she hadn’t woken up, their lips would have touched. Blushing furiously at the thought of sharing her first kiss in a dream, Lorencia buried her face in the pillow.

“Why am I having dreams like this?”

Though it was only a dream, her heart pounded as if suffering arrhythmia, and heat rushed to her face.

“Since the dream was so strange, I can’t fall back asleep.”

Having woken before dawn and stayed wide awake until morning, Lorencia received a summons from Anne early that day. Her already thin face looked even more gaunt from lack of sleep. Anne clicked her tongue in evident disdain.

“I called you because I have something to say.”

“Yes.”

“I’ve found a young lord to be your escort and dance partner for your debutante ball.”

In the previous future, it had been the second son of a viscount’s family—the same man who’d taught her social dancing.

“Yes.”

“It’s Viscount Lorilors of House Stopugh. He’ll personally teach you social dancing as well. Just do exactly as he instructs.”

Anne glared at Lorencia with undisguised contempt. Lorencia silently bowed her head.

“I have one question.”

“Yes.”

“How exactly did you drive Julie away?”

“I didn’t drive her away.”

“The maids say you whispered something to Julie, and she turned deathly pale and quit as head maid as if fleeing for her life. What did you say to her?”

“I told her I’d spare her life.”

Anne fixed Lorencia with a sharp, icy stare. While she’d been away, her beloved Julie had suddenly left.

“Julie probably left because she thought I was a monster.”

Lorencia spoke with a light laugh.

“What did you say?”

“Everyone in Count Paul Heredian’s mansion calls me a monster, don’t they?”

“So you’re saying Julie ran away in fear because you’re a monster?”

“That’s probably it. If the people serving her keep calling her a monster, why would she want to stay? She had to escape before the monster devoured her.”

Anne let out a forced, mocking laugh. After laughing for a while, she stopped, rose from her seat, walked over to where Lorencia sat, and slapped her hard across the face with her right hand. Lorencia’s head snapped sideways with a sharp *crack*.

“Seems you find joking amusing.”

Anne’s brows furrowed deeply.

“I don’t know what weakness you exploited to drive Julie out of the mansion, but remember this—there are plenty of others in this count’s house who’ll make your life miserable besides Julie. Viscount Lorilors will arrive soon; if you cause any embarrassment, be prepared to go without food for two days.”

“Understood.”

Lorilors arrived at House Paul Heredian. After briefly speaking with Anne, he followed Arden’s guidance to meet Lorencia.

Arden walked quickly as he led the way to the drawing room.

“Head Butler, could you walk a bit slower?”

“My apologies. Haha.”

Arden gave an awkward laugh, swallowing the rising nausea within. “Reaping what you sow” was a phrase made for Lorilors. His protruding belly was tolerable, but the stench of alcohol and foul breath every time he spoke was unbearable.

All Arden wanted was to deliver him to Lorencia as quickly as possible and flee.

“Here we are.”

Arden opened the drawing room door and announced to Lorilors.

As soon as Lorilors entered, he raked his eyes over Lorencia seated on the sofa, from head to toe.

“Not bad at all.”

Lorilors’ eyes widened as soon as he saw Lorencia.

Her fragile frame and small stature, the unnaturally thin neck and ankles that looked as if they’d snap under the slightest pressure—all gave an odd impression. Especially striking were her violet eyes, which seemed mysterious.

“I am Lorilors of House Stopugh.”

“I am Lorencia of House Paul Heredian.”

“Have you ever danced before?”

“Never.”

“I’ll instruct you well.”

Lorilors kept swallowing hard and licking his lips. Though a bastard, his heart raced at the thought of holding a noble young lady—not a courtesan—in his arms for the first time in ages. He recalled his conversation with Anne upon arriving at the mansion.

Anne had handed him a heavy purse of coins, telling him he could do as he pleased.

Lorilors had taken the money, promising Anne he’d show affection to Lorencia, the bastard daughter she despised.

“Let me teach you what dancing truly is.”

Every time Lorencia looked up at him, Lorilors’ lips curled higher into a smile. Her sunken cheeks and frail frame—put on a little weight, and she’d surely become a beauty. It felt like discovering an uncut diamond buried in mud.

“Then I leave it in your hands, Viscount Lorilors.”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
