Alice felt a chill run down her spine.

She had only encountered him when disguised as Alan—and even then, he was merely a mercenary. Had he immediately noticed their resemblance, he might have pressed her about her true identity. She quickly lowered her arm and turned away, but Eddie swiftly closed the distance between them.

“Your face seems unfamiliar around here. Who might you be?”

Eddie’s face popped into Alice’s field of vision. Upon closer inspection, his features weren’t as sharp as she’d imagined—on the contrary, he looked gentle enough that he couldn’t even kill an ant.

Judging by his puzzled expression, he hadn’t immediately figured out who she really was. Alice kept her guard up but deliberately averted her gaze.

“Ah, um… hello… I’m a new handmaiden in the Empress’s quarters.”

“But you seem awfully familiar. Could we have met before?”

“Impossible! I’ve truly never seen you before! Hahaha….”

Forcing a laugh nearly gave her a facial spasm. Apparently satisfied with her answer, Eddie grinned broadly and bowed slightly.

“I’m Eddie from the Licas Mercenary Company. We’re currently under contract with the Imperial Household and stationed here.”

“Oh, the Licas Mercenary Company! I’ve heard of you—you’re the ones who took down those nobles causing trouble at Clover Tavern!”

“We’re quite famous, then? Goodness, our faces are already known everywhere.”

Eddie waved his hands dismissively, blushing slightly in embarrassment. For a mercenary, he was refreshingly unguarded—and Alice was immensely relieved.

Seizing the opening, Alice quickly flattered him.

“O-of course! You’re incredibly famous! Everyone was talking about you nonstop for a while—haha!”
