Alice’s schedule to enter the Empress’s palace was postponed by a few more days. Apparently, there was chaos due to the death of the Imperial Court’s chief technomancer.

It was for the better, in fact. Thanks to this delay, she was granted a brief moment to bid farewell to the servants in the mansion.

Even if she were to begin preparations for entering the palace immediately, there was still much to do. She had her clothes tailored for the first time in ages, and even sorting out what she needed left her pressed for time.

Among the servants exchanging goodbyes with Alice, some couldn’t hold back tears.

“I suppose I must have been rather likable after all. Everyone’s celebrating me like this.”

“Of course! We’ve always wished in our hearts that someone as wonderful as you, Miss Alice, would find great success.”

“Oh, stop it already! You’ll make me cry! It’s not like we’ll never see each other again—why say things like that?”

“It’s because we’re happy. It fills me with joy to see our eldest young lady succeed so gloriously.”

They say to judge a person, observe how they treat others. Alice had always been kind, and her warm character showed in how graciously she overlooked others’ minor mistakes. Not a single servant in the mansion disliked or shunned the eldest young lady.

Although occasionally she did sneak out on her own, causing the maids no small amount of distress.

Alice sent everyone out of her room, insisting on packing her belongings alone. Then she retrieved from under her bed a short-haired wig and a red book.

‘I must meet Cecilia.’

A few days ago, disguised as Alan, she’d waited near the back gate of the Eastell mansion but failed to meet her. All she’d learned from a maid was that Cecilia had returned to the academy.

The short wig in her hands kept nagging at her. Should she meet Cecilia as Alan? She’d wrestled with this all last night but finally fell asleep without reaching a decision.

If Cecilia discovered that Alan was actually Alice, would she be disappointed? Or would she slap her in sheer exasperation?
