Dew formed by dawn cloaked the grassy field.

With each soft step, droplets scattered low. Beyond the distant horizon, a hue like flame rose as daybreak approached.

Ilyd walked slowly toward the Empress’s palace. Though she walked alone, without maids, her steps—though seemingly lonely at first glance—carried quiet strength.

The sensation of Rivel’s whispered oath still lingered on the back of her hand. The faint warmth that had touched her bare forehead melted the chill from her hands. As if trying to preserve that warmth, Ilyd quickened her pace, cradling her hand.

He was a mercenary bound by contract to the Emperor, a man of remarkable skill. Moreover, his company had recently recruited new members, further increasing his numbers. The factions surrounding Rivel were far from insignificant—too strong to eliminate him by picking arbitrary faults.

And given Claudius’s nature, he would never dare openly harm Rivel.

‘Because he is arrogant. He would never admit his own miscalculation.’

It was Claudius himself who had brought Rivel into the imperial palace. If Claudius were to move against Rivel now, he would publicly admit his own poor judgment.

If Rivel became a “Shadow,” Claudius would surely scrutinize every move Ilyd and her “Shadow” made. Once his attention fixated entirely on the Empress’s palace, vulnerabilities would inevitably reveal themselves.
