Claudius smiled as he watched the meal being brought in. The reason for his smile was not the steaming-hot food, but the news he had just received.

“The poison spread faster than I expected.”

All of Rivel’s symptoms were consistent with the poison Claudius had used. There were many possible reasons for the dizziness and high fever—doctors would certainly diagnose it as nothing more than a simple fever.

Behind Claudius stood Kaelum. His expression grew increasingly grim as he listened to the Emperor’s words. He had anticipated it, but not this quickly.

White tablecloths were laid out, and plates adorned with white and gold decorations were placed one after another. Claudius muttered to himself as though he believed no one else was around.

“I anticipated they’d bring the Grand Duke alive rather than kill him outright.”

In truth, it made no difference whether Rivel lived or died. It would have been fine if Rivel had been beheaded on the spot—but since they’d brought him to the capital, Claudius intended to make the Grand Duke pay dearly for raising arms against the Emperor.

“I’ll need to give Tamil extra wages. He’ll have more work starting next week.”

Fear was the easiest way to control the masses. Claudius knew this well and intended to manipulate public sentiment through terror.

“And the Empress? Has word reached the Empress’s palace yet?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. It should have reached her by now.”

“I wonder what expression she’s wearing right now… I hope tonight proves to be the turning point. Ah—was there still a coffin left in the hospital basement?”

For someone who coveted what belonged to another, this end was rather tame. He should have crawled through the lowest depths in utter despair before dying. Even so, this death could certainly be called pitiful.

Claudius let out a short laugh as he imagined Rivel’s impending death.

The freshly cut meat gleamed vividly, its red cross-section standing out against the white plate. The long, grand table, laden with death, was utterly serene.
