Left alone in the Emperor’s office, Rivel tilted his head back slightly. He wanted to force down the sudden heat rising within him, but it wasn’t easy.

A faint, hollow chuckle briefly appeared and vanished on Rivel’s lips as he stood still for a moment. Slowly, he left the Imperial Palace—he had no reason to linger there longer than necessary.

Though the Emperor’s manner of issuing commands seemed excessively calm, it somehow felt urgent, as if he were being chased. It was different—somewhere—from his usual lazy-eyed demeanor.

‘He saw it.’

Ilyd leaning against him, crying in the graveyard, and Rivel holding her—surely all of it had been witnessed in full.

Rivel, walking toward the garrison, suddenly stopped in his tracks. Perhaps this was for the best. Claudius would now openly drive him toward certain death. But Rivel had no intention whatsoever of meekly accepting the blade pointed straight at his solar plexus.

The problem was Ilyd, who would be left alone, even briefly. If Claudius seized this incident as an excuse, he might mistreat her or even imprison her.

His unsettled heart had turned into poison, recoiling upon itself. He’d believed he’d finally let go, calmed his feelings—but the moment Ilyd leaned into him, everything collapsed helplessly.

If only he hadn’t held her then, if only he’d used his usual stealth ability as he normally would have—would he have avoided being dispatched to Rosen?

But standing still and wallowing in regret was a waste of precious time. Rivel hastened his steps toward the garrison. After preparing to depart for Rosen, he absolutely had to see Ilyd, even for just a moment.

The resistance forces of Rosen, having reclaimed the city center, moved busily even in the darkness.

Their makeshift command room, hastily converted from a warehouse, was crowded with people. Almost no one wore military uniforms. Most were ordinary citizens who had lived day by day in Rosen—merely a hastily assembled militia.

Their occupations varied widely. Most worked in fishing or belonged to merchant guilds.

Those who had handled firearms before were given weapons reclaimed from the armory. But the majority had never properly held a weapon, let alone a gun.
