A fluttering long strip of green fabric. The scarf neatly wrapped around Ilyd’s neck was now held in Claudius’s hand, growing distant.

Rivel could only watch. He knew better than anyone that he was in no position to step forward.

What on earth had happened inside there? In Rivel’s mind, an image formed of Claudius reaching out toward Ilyd.

‘No.’

It was a horrifying scene he couldn’t even bear to imagine. He turned his head away from Claudius, who was walking farther off.

Claudius had taken something Rivel himself had never dared claim, as if it were his right. Rivel’s hands tightened, his clenched fists beginning to tremble faintly.

‘Is this jealousy?’

It probably was. A crooked smirk soon appeared at the corner of Rivel’s lips. He wanted nothing more than to rush into the Empress’s quarters right then and ask what had happened—whether Claudius had harmed her in any way.

But what if, by some remote chance, Ilyd still harbored feelings for Claudius?

As if trying to shake off these tangled thoughts, Rivel shook his head several times. He hurried off into the darkness, planning to head straight to the training grounds to swing a wooden sword. Perhaps that would ease the suffocating weight pressing down on his chest.

Contrary to Rivel’s worries, after escaping Claudius, Ilyd returned immediately to her office.

She had feared Claudius might follow her, but thankfully, that did not happen. Instead, something else troubled her.

‘Did he get away safely?’

Since he was merely traveling within the Imperial Palace, he likely reached his destination without incident. Judging by Claudius’s lack of objection, Rivel’s escape must have succeeded.

Yet, strangely, she still felt stifled. She had thought it a success after seeing Claudius’s flustered expression—but then, what was the problem?
