The sun hanging high in the sky was slowly tilting toward the west.

Before those seated together inside the cabin, teacups had been set down again—and emptied.

Rivel shifted his posture, crossed his arms, and leaned back against his chair. His body relaxed, but his eyes remained razor-sharp.

“You made a renewal agreement with the imperial house, didn’t you? You haven’t forgotten you’re leading the mercenaries, have you?”

“Of course not.”

It was a perilous tightrope walk. One misstep could cost not only Rivel’s life but the lives of every mercenary under his command.

“Never let them get the upper hand. Protect every single mercenary, no matter what. If you ever abandon them to danger and act like it’s none of your concern, I’ll be the first to cut your head off.”
