“Leaving? Leaving to go where…?”

“Here. I mean this boring place.”

Was he simply probing? But Rivel’s eyes were steady and clear. He straightened his back once more and looked around. Everyone was immersed in idle chatter or slumped over wine jars, too absorbed in their own drunken revelry to even glance—let alone pay attention—to the two of them.

Ilyd instinctively scanned the direction where Claudius and Celina were. By now, the two had drawn close, whispering intimate words to each other. Of course. A short sigh escaped her lips.

Yet no matter how indifferent those around them seemed, she always had to remain cautious. If someone happened to spread word that she’d left with an outsider—a mere mercenary—it would be twisted into something strange in no time.

“We must always be careful, especially with so many watching eyes. It’s dangerous to leave like this.”

“Then, let’s do as we did that day.”

Rivel raised his index finger to his lips. A gesture for silence, perhaps. Ilyd found herself nodding without even realizing it.

He soon extended his hand toward Ilyd. Bewildered and unsure of his intention, she simply stared blankly at his open palm.

The worn surface of his black leather glove was clearly visible. For a fleeting moment, she felt an impulse to see his bare hand beneath the glove.

“Will you take it?”

His words made her cheeks burn. It felt as if he’d overheard the very thought she’d kept to herself. Carefully, Ilyd reached out and took his hand—

though she couldn’t bring herself to grasp it fully, managing only to timidly clutch his fingertips.

Rivel gave her a faint, gentle smile and said,

“From now on, don’t let your gaze fall on anyone else. Pretend there’s no one around Her Imperial Majesty the Empress or me—only the two of us exist.”
