Inside the Clover Tavern, Alice always appeared as ‘Alan’.

Attending a tavern frequented by commoners while dressed for a social gathering was unimaginable. She’d likely be denied entry the moment she stepped inside wearing her elaborate gown.

Even coming in her everyday clothes from the mansion would have been fine. A hint of regret flickered across Alan’s face as she took another sip from her glass.

But one never knew when or where an acquaintance might spot her and expose the truth. If word got out among servants from other households, it was only a matter of time before her father found out.

Sneaking out of the mansion and making the arduous trip here, then returning unnoticed, was no easy feat. Yet, for the sake of the food and the atmosphere this place offered, such effort was well worth it.

“Hey, Alan!”

“Jake, congrats on finishing your shift. How about a drink?”

A tired-looking man approached, waving at Alan. His face, unshaven for who knew how long, was shadowed by a patchy beard.

Jake plopped down heavily beside Alan and scratched his head.

“Goodness, I can’t even remember the last time I made it home. My wife and daughter might’ve forgotten what I look like by now.”

“Being busy is a good thing—it means the newspaper’s doing well, right? Better than sitting at your desk with nothing to report but dust.”

“If only it were all good news… We’ve got to face unpleasant things head-on too, don’t we?”

Soon, a mug of beer and some simple snacks were set before Jake. Though they wanted to talk properly, the rowdy din from drunken patrons grew so loud they could barely hear each other without shouting.

“Should we move somewhere quieter?”

“No. You won’t find a better place than this for talking.”
