“Are you taking a walk?”

“Yes, I just felt like walking a bit…”

“Allow me to accompany you.”

“Rivel. The palace is full of people’s gazes.”

She recalled having warned Rivel before: to be careful with his words inside the palace. This time, it was a warning about attention. Should any nobles happen to see them wandering the palace grounds, who knew what rumors they might exaggerate and spread.

“It’s fine as long as you’re by my side.”

Rivel’s reply was ambiguous. She couldn’t tell whether he meant he’d protect her or that he’d take measures to keep them unseen.

Yet, for some reason, she trusted him. Could she really feel such trust toward a stranger?

Hesitantly, she looked up into Rivel’s eyes, which sparkled with an almost overwhelming brightness. If she were to refuse, it seemed he’d be even more hurt. Any thoughts she’d had over tea had long since vanished.

In the end, Ilyd nodded as if under a spell.

“Then… I’ll leave it to you.”

Silence filled the air as they walked. It had been a long time since she’d walked alongside someone unfamiliar after entering the imperial palace.

Strangely enough, not a single person paid attention to Ilyd and Rivel as they headed toward the Empress’s residence. It wasn’t just that people kept their distance—though they did—but even from afar, the situation should have been noticeable, yet no one seemed to care.

Was he really casting some kind of magic? Ilyd glanced sideways at Rivel walking beside her—or rather, looked up at him. He stood easily a head taller than her, naturally casting a shadow over her.
