The private audience with Claudius was as noisy as ever today. Lindein left the Imperial Palace utterly drained.

As always, the root cause was the Emperor’s own desire—always love directed toward one person: Ilyd, his own wife, who had now given her heart to another.

‘That must be why he wore that expression just now.’

No sooner had Lindein finished saying those aboard were linked to the assassination plot against Ilyd than Claudius rose abruptly. His previously calm breathing gradually grew ragged.

Lindein read fierce, murderous intent in the Emperor’s eyes. In truth, Claudius had not contorted his face, furrowed his brow, or shouted aloud.

Yet the emotion visible in those crimson eyes was nothing but rage. Had the real culprit stood before him instead of Lindein, Claudius would have immediately throttled him and torn out his heart with his fingernails.

Rage, frankly, was easier to listen to than desire. At the very least, that emotion aligned with Lindein’s own, making empathy possible.

Claudius promised active cooperation.

The fact that he immediately summoned the Captain of the Imperial Guard and dispatched investigators secretly toward Milen Harbor right then and there suggested it was more than just empty words. Lindein also conveyed a message to the Alliance leader, saying he would send a diviner.

Only once far from Claudius did the noise finally subside. The fresh air outside the Imperial Palace felt unexpectedly welcome.

‘The Emperor knows which noble house is involved with the smugglers.’

Clearly, he had turned a blind eye until now. That was one of the few pieces of information Lindein had gleaned from the Emperor’s tangled, turbulent emotions.

Due to reforms, relations between the Emperor and the nobles had soured, and Claudius planned to seize on the slightest misstep by certain aristocratic families he longed to purge. Most likely, the house involved in smuggling would become his first sacrificial lamb.
