I Will Live for Your Death (20 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 186
The Empire’s High Court was effectively a hollow institution. Under the Empress Dowager, the Emperor’s absolute authority had kept it suppressed, but by Claudius’s reign, it had begun quietly regaining its footing.
No matter how exalted the Emperor’s position—said to be as high as the heavens—it was still an institution that, alongside the parliament, could offer at least a modicum of restraint.
The High Court held the authority to register imperial decrees. Before any decree could be enacted, it had the right to deliberate upon and amend it. Only after the Court’s approval would a law carry legal force.
The problem lay in the fact that judicial posts had long been bought, sold, and inherited through generations.
“We must absolutely block any attempt to impose taxation rights. It’s painful, yes—even inserting commoner-born officers into the Imperial Guard—but… we’ll have to concede that much.”
“Who currently sits as judge in the High Court?”
“Someone who inherited the post from their father. A commoner by birth.”
“Then they’re perfectly suited for our purposes.”
The relics of the old regime had united with one mind and one purpose.
They planned to oppose the new tax collection law and subtly leak evidence of the Imperial Household’s extravagance and wastefulness.
“Ah—ahem! Please tread as gently as possible near the Empress Consort’s quarters. With Her Majesty carrying the Imperial Grandson, we wouldn’t want the sensitive Empress Consort to suffer any shock…”
“Rest assured. We owe the Empress Consort’s quarters numerous favors already.”
Since all of Marquess Geminia’s illicit funds had passed through the Empress Consort’s palace, Count Diobe was deeply anxious.
They had assumed the Empress Consort had abandoned them—yet perhaps she was still looking after them, considering them her daughter. The gathered nobles clicked their tongues lightly in their mouths.
“If we merely disclose the amount of the Imperial Household’s slush funds, public outrage will erupt. Not only will the High Court’s influence rise… but our own paths forward will become far more prosperous.”
