The wasteland near the Astrid border was peculiar in that the sun set unusually early. Once sunset passed, the red glow beyond the distant mountain range quietly faded into darkness.

Taking advantage of the approaching night, a few soldiers moved swiftly. And behind them, a boy silently followed, carefully concealing his presence.

After barely escaping the burning warehouse, Rivel learned that Countess Melphiram and Young Master Limres had been hacked to pieces.

Though he worried about Ilyd in the imperial palace, who must surely be in shock, his immediate priority was gathering the scattered remains of the Countess and the Young Master. Rivel had spotted the soldiers moving covertly under the Emperor’s orders and swiftly took action.

Rivel had grown accustomed to suppressing his presence since childhood. Even the common soldiers—and Limres himself—often marveled at his uncanny skill, calling it remarkable.

He had long looked forward to the day he would officially join the soldiers’ roster as an adult, when he could finally put his abilities to proper use.

But that hope had crumbled into dust. The fleeting moments of happiness he’d briefly held were now gone, leaving only faint imprints on his palm.

Claudius. Again and again, Rivel silently trampled the name with all his hatred while stifling his presence. Wasn’t it enough that he already had Ilyd? How could someone who possessed everything still be so afraid?

The soldiers halted their steps. Beside them sat a small box whose contents could easily be guessed. They whispered among themselves briefly before beginning to dig into the ground.

Rivel killed his presence entirely. In the darkness behind him, a shadow writhed quietly and softly cradled the soles of his feet. His footsteps made no sound at all. The soldiers remained completely unaware.

It was the perfect moment for assassination.

The soldier standing guard nearby fell first. His vital point was instantly slashed, and he collapsed, bleeding to death.

Next fell the one who had been digging, then the man who had been marking a map. Neither was given even a moment to cry out. He couldn’t tell if they’d felt any pain. To Rivel, what mattered more urgently was the object they’d tossed into the pit.

Rivel thrust his arm into the darkness of the pit. Soon, something solid met his touch.

Illuminated by the lamp the soldiers had left burning, it was the right arm of Limres Rowen Melphiram.
